之前在manhattan上看到：by不能表示方式方法，后面只能+doer,表示方法一般用through等，那这道题？求教，by到底能不能表发方法方式

with和by的区别：
(1) 做某事时通过什么方法或手段用by：do something by (doing) something。
(2) 表示使用有形工具时，通常用with来表示：write with a pen, see with naked eyes, strike with a hammar
(3) 作”用”讲时，by和with的区别在于：with表示行为动作的工具，后面的名词一般要有冠词；by表示动作的手段，后面的名词一律不用冠词。

by介賓短語在這裡修飾的是主句，就是chimpanzees和exhibit。爲什麽不是new patterns原因如下：by介賓短語作為verb modifier，要求能夠與修飾的主語make sense。但是如果by修飾的是new patternd的話就不對了，new patterns怎麼能夠模仿實踐呢？衹有chimpanzees才可以啊。然後，關於by衹能加doer的問題，manhattan說這種用法是用於被動語態，through也是。在主動語態裏面用by來表示方式沒問題。如果by修飾的是chimpanzees的話，由於chimpanzees對應的是主動語態，所以這樣使用沒問題~zZ

然後，關於by衹能加doer的問題，manhattan說這種用法是用於被動語態，through也是

by one's doing在語法上是對的，但是在選項裏面的話，還是要具體問題具體分析哈^^

在逻辑主语一致的情况下，动词ing 是成立的，但如果动词ing的发出主体不是主句主语，就必须要sb's doing或 sth doing.

请问，有by curiosity这种用法么？一般不是out of curiosity?
