Q14:

The single-family house constructed by the Yana, a Native American people who lived in what is now northern California, was conical in shape, its framework of poles overlaid with slabs of bark, either cedar or pine, and banked with dirt to a height of three to four feet.

支持D选项

单纯从语法的角度,A和E都没问题,

但A中 to a height of three to four feet并不是dirt的高度,而是指framework 的高度,这是不可理喻的,

D中 as high as...是修饰dirt的,指用那么高的土堆起来,这个比较合理.

我支持应该是ABC的结构, 因为一是和前面overlaid平行,更主要的是这是个过去分词独立结构, 如果用了DE的was 整个就是个run-on的结构

但我想知道B是不是去掉that of 就对了捏

我开始选的A, 但是现在比较倾向于D, 因为A确实存在并列的不明确的问题, 即可以和前面的constructed并列, 而且a height of这种结构也确实在大全里面没有查到, 至少说明ETS不prefer这个用法.

应该也不对。banked with dirt to a height of强调了bank这个动作的结果：framework被垫高到3-4feet

banked with (dirt as high as 3-4 feet) as high as 作dirt的后置定语，说明用来bank的dirt的高度是3-4 feet，语法上可以，但逻辑上与原文有差别。

high 和 height 有没有区别？记得tall 和 high在使用上是有区别的。另外D中用 as high as three to four feet, 就是说 three to four feet 的概念就是 high，但实际上 three to four feet 只是一个中性的表述。而且前言中有conical in shape的结构，A中的banked （with dirt） to a height 看上去蛮对称的。

我觉得GWD－11－14题原文的意思应该是“这个屋子是圆锥型的，它的木杆框架上覆盖了松树的树皮，然后用泥土堆到3－4英尺高。”

也就是说后面的成分its framework of poles overlaid with slabs of bark, either cedar or pine, and banked with dirt to a height of three to four feet. 都是用来说明房子是怎么建的。banked with dirt的对象其实是framework of poles

所以我坚持A是正确的

而C的意思是整个房子是用图堆的，而我们看图片可以知道，房子应该是树枝、树皮搭建的，又用土作为黏合剂。这个房子确实就只有1米多高。

此外,如果D,was banked修饰House的话,似乎离修饰对象太远,和前面的its framework of poles overlaid with slabs of bark, either cedar or pine, and不太连贯.两个was xxx之间夹入一个独立充分不像很好的句法.

如果选D,那么里面them是指什么捏?its framework可是单数.

leeon: 这道题选A存在了一个很严重的问题，banked分词并列和谁并列，大家都说和overlaid并列，为什么不是和constructed并列，和the ...house逻辑搭配上完全没问题。这一点D改用一般过去时只能和和前面唯一的一般过去时并列，fixed the problem.

支持，整句先讲一个总体形状conical, 然后再讲述如何建成的。banked with dirt to a height of 3-4 feet 修饰framework, 且和overlaid...平行。

D中，was banked with...从语法上看是修饰主语house的，和was conical平行。但离开太远，且as high as 3-4 feet 是一个比较，土堆和尺寸比较吗？显然不对吧

既然有形容词当然优于源自它的名词垃 .

另外,虽然句法难看了,但就是一个独立成分后用and并列 was banked 修饰house.这种句子阅读里很多.尽管ETS偶尔也会说喂语太远话

But how can we say

终于找到组织了.

大面积向A靠拢.

D的逻辑意思挺难理解的:房子只用土加水垒成圆锥型,这个难度还是很大的吧.而且Yana人有进步到这个程度吗.所以土一定是用来固定主要支撑物:杆子.

native american个子是挺小的,亚洲人曾认为是我们的同族,但是人家不领情.所以帐蓬形状的房子只有3,4尺高,是合理的.

本题考点：主谓搭配和平行对称

1)主语framework

谓语一：overlaid with...

and

谓语二：所以应该是banked with... DE 排除

2)ABC相比，竖着看最明显的差别是height的表达方法。C多了them，多余，优选AB。

因此，to a height of 相比新出现的as high as，更加清晰简洁。（实意名词优于形容词考点。）况且，B的that of 也罗嗦了。

因此不想那么多了，快速选择A

you are misreading the parallelism. you are correct that 'banked with dirt...' has to be parallel to something. unfortunately, though, the 'something' in question happens to be 'overlaid with slabs...'.

in other words, 'banked with dirt' applies to the framework of poles, not to the house itself.

but you have identified the other problem: there is a meaning shift. if you say 'dirt as high as four feet', you're implying that most of the dirt is well below the four-foot level, but that four feet is the maximum height. the correct answer choice, on the other hand, states that the height of the dirt bank is consistently three to four feet. remember, if the meaning of the original sentence is intellligible, you are not allowed to change it - a principle that decides the meaning in this case. (the meaning in choice d isn't absurd, but it conflicts with what you're told in the original sentence.)

a final problem with choice d is that the phrase 'as high as' should be followed by one value, not a range.
some of our players weigh as much as 300-325 pounds --> bad phrasing
some of our players weigh as much as 325 pounds --> good phrasing
