The writer claims that governments shouldprovide their major cities with financial support in order to guarantee theirprosperity for the reason that a nation’s cultural traditions are wellpreserved and generated there. Admittedly, the metropolises are truly importantfor a nation for their characteristics, it is not sufficient for us to believethat those major cities are prior to all other areas.
We ought to be aware that the metropolises,where the mainstream culture, economy affairs and politics take place, areirreplaceable to a country. No one could deny that Beijing does play anessential role in China, for the city conveys a lot of characteristics ofChina, such as Beijing Opera, the Great Wall, the Forbidden City and so on. Andit is also widely known that the New York City, which could best reflect theprosperity of America, is a symbol of the country. So these cities trulydeserve the investment to develop.
However, it is not the truth that a nation’scultural traditions are primarily preserved and generated in big cities. Wecould not simply equate a nation’s culture with the mainstream culture ofmetropolises regardless of some folklores and handcrafts. Almost every touristcoming to China from foreign countries will buy some embroidery, which is anancient and complex handcraft in south China. But one may find it hard to get authentichandmade embroidery in the developed big cities like Shanghai and Nanjing. Onthe contrary, in many rural areas in south China, the residents living in somerural areas possess such crafts. It is quite common that a plenty of precioustraditions and handcrafts are well preserved in the countryside rather thanthose metropolises.
In the era of rapid development ofglobalization and economy, major cities in different countries do share a lotof features. The same skyscrapers, crowded metro and glitter lights have madethose modern cities more and more uniform. A good example is that one of myEnglish teachers coming from New York City got used to the life in Shanghaisoon partly due to the similarities between two cities. So the characteristicsof a metropolis may not be a good indication of a country’s culture custom andhistory.
To sum up, we concede that a major cityplays a critical role in a country, while it does not suffice to convince usthat big cities ought to be supported by governments. Overlooking the sometowns and countryside may jeopardize the culture of a country.
