Scientists have recently discovered that the ultrathin, layered construction of a butterfly’s wings, the same as the one making some butterflies shimmer via the phenomenon of iridescence, are enabling the insect to control how much heat energy is absorbed by its wings and how much is reflected away.

我已经把C选项放进去了 三个部分都有完整的主谓结构 enabing在句尾做临近句子的伴随 即伴随makes
为什么C选项不对?

LS 同学 。C不对, 逗号后的现在分词结构做状语,直接修饰Scientists have recently discovered that,这是严重不符合句意的。
句子是要让enables做the ultrathin 直接动词。

【關於also】
Also是adverb,表示“另外“。
個人認為不用糾結它具體用法是什麽,只要確定它的詞性,並且知道它的意思,什麼時候用also就根據句子的意思以及also的修飾對象來定。
例如上例的意思為,U物質可以使蝴蝶shimmer,也可以使昆蟲controlXX。根據句意,存在一個“也”的意思,所以可以用also(副詞)來修飾第二個動作的動詞:)把also看做是一個普通的副詞就可了。

根據句子的意思,ultrathin既可以使得蝴蝶shimmer,也可以使昆蟲XX。
注意,這裡使這兩個動作發生的ultrathin是同一種物質,都是蝴蝶翅膀上面的layered construction。
對於指代同一個事物要用,the same that;指代同一類物質,但是不是同一個的話,用the same as。例:
This is the same bag as I lost yesterday.这个书包和我昨天丢失的相似。【相似的書包】
This is the same bag that I lost yesterday.这正是我昨天丢失的书包。【就是那個書包】
注意C項the same as the one與D項the same that的區別。

是应该修饰紧邻的句子,不过这里无论是修饰紧邻的动词、还是修饰主句都说不通吧。。。不可能把enabling作为伴随动作或者伴随状态的,之间没有主从联系啊。。。

那你这里理解为伴随动作还是伴随结果还是伴随状态??明显都说不通。。。

这里在句子末尾用“,enabling ”表明的是伴随状语修饰整个句子。因为gmat中不允许which加逗号引导非限定性定语从句修饰整个句子,所以修饰整个句子的方法就变成了有以下两种方法。第一种 absolute phrases 绝对短语 就是名词和名词的修饰语。例子 His head held high, Owen walked out the store. Owen walked out the store, his head held high. Owen walked out the store, with his head held high. 这三种都正确
Scientists have found high levels of iridium in certain geological formations around the world, results that suggest the cataclysmic impact of a meteor millions of years ago.
可以看出这两个例子的伴随状语都是修饰整个句子的,若是单单修饰句子中某一个词就会显得没有意义了。
第二种就是 comma 加动词ing的形式了。比如之前scientists的句子就可以改写成Scientists have found high…, SUGGESTING the cataclysmic impact of a meteor millions of years ago. 这整个动名词修饰这整个句子。
然而此题中显然enable的主语不会是前面整个句子而是那个 ultrathin 的结构,而且语义明显表明作者想强调 ultrathin不仅可以。。。更可以enable。。。
所以楼主语义是关键啊。破折号在gmat中很灵活,一般不会有用错的时候。

然后,看RON分析的他没有说the same as和the same that有什么区别,他只是把C的the same as the one归为了wordy
所以C的主要错误点还是V-ing的使用不恰当问题
when a COMMA + -ING modifier is applied to a complex construction such as this one, it is USUALLY applied to the nearest clause -- even if that clause is embedded within a subordinate construction.however, you would be wise to check both contexts.
in this case, however, this distinction doesn't really matter, as the comma -ing modifier doesn't make any sense with either of the two preceding clauses.
