As far as I am concern, leaders ought to take people's concerns into account in a proper way. For overly relying on the leaders own decisions and judgments will inevitably bring about the disastrous results to us.
The claim that a leader who is easily affected by the shifts in popular opinion will accomplish little does make sense to some extent. For the officials, adherence to correct principle is important and necessary for achieving the primary goal, and is also a useful virtue of an effective leader. We should concede that the general public tend to think of their personal interests, and are less informed than the leaders. In some essential fields, such as military, economy and diploma, indiscriminately compromising to the general people who are not aware of the importance and complexity of those issues may jeopardize the general welfare. So the insistence of a leader is indispensible to some extent.
However, we should not simply equate the adherence to correct principles to being blind to the people’s concern, and I believe that a receptive attitude toward the public is one of the most critical characteristics of a successful leader. Disregarding people’s concerns may bring about harmful effects. As for the leaders of art like music, fiction and movie, without the awareness of people’s current interests, it is hard for them to create excellent works which could cater people’s taste. One famous movie director in China named Feng Xiaogang has always made his films popular among spectators by adding some elements, which are faddish and well-liked by people, to his movies. Thus we should acknowledge that the opinions from people ought to be taken into account by leaders in many fields.
We believe that stubborn commitments to certain objective may result in unexpected results, it is also essential to be aware that overly relying on the judgment of the leaders or on the opinions from general people will both brings about harmful effects. Thus, an adequate leader should be receptive and staunch. Only by occupying such characteristics, can a leader make sensible decision instead of being reckless or obsequious.
To sum up, we can imagine that a leader who is easily affected by public opinions will find it hard to meet everyone’s requirements, however, and it is obvious that a pontificate leader who never considered of the attitudes of ordinary people would accomplish nothing.
