Comparing to the human society in a hundred years ago, the educational level in today's world has been improved vastly, which is benefiting from the fast development of society, science, technology and economy. In many countries, especially developed countries, universal cover of elementary education has realized and high education has no longer been the privilege of the nobility. All kinds of educational institutions have been significant bases for cultivating the specialized, sophisticated citizens. In such situation, whether the educational institutions should encourage the students to be the 'most suitable' or 'most want to be' citizens has been a controversial argument. In my point of view, the two opinions have both their own rationalities and disadvantages and a appropriate and reasonable mixing up of two methods will be a suitable and effective solution.
Admittedly, in today's world, it is reasonable and suitable for the society's needs that a student to choose a job with lucrative future. Considering that every student needs to work after graduation from schools, choosing a major with better future is fair and reasonable. If the knowledge the student have studied cannot match the needs of the society, which means unemployment after graduation, the student will not only fail to develop his hobby but also need to worry about the living problem.
However, aside from the opinion listed above, the educational institutions should not encourage the students to choose the majors only taking account of the future of profitability. As the people saying goes: interest is the best teacher. Educational institutions should encourage students to study what they are really interested in. Students often work harder in the fields which they like and it is easier for them to succeed in those fields. For supporting examples, one should look no further than the scientific communities: many enormous accomplishments of famous scientists, such as Newton, Einstein, are closely related with their deep love of their studying fields.
Furthermore, as we know, in such dynamic world, career prospects are not forever unchanged. One can hardly estimate the future of a field only by observing the current situations. Fifty years ago, electronics and software industries are just small companions to the traditional heavy industries, such as manufacture. But today, thousands of millionaires and the biggest business giants, such as Microsoft and Google have come from the two industries and change the face of the world and society. Apparently, to the original participants to these industries, their majors in universities were certainly not considered as 'majors with great future'. Furthermore, no matter in which majors you are, to be a expert in your major can always lead a good job because in a society with so complex and developed diversification, an expert is always needed.
To sum up, a student is easier to succeed in the major he likes and at the same time, taking account of the needs of the society when choosing majors will give students more lucrative and hopeful jobs after their graduations. So, educational institutions should fully respect the interests of students and make suggestions according to the needs of the market and society, which takes advantages of both methods.
2012-11-10 22:34 Comparing to the human society in a hundredyears ago, the educational level in today's world has been(这个可以不要) improved vastly, which is benefiting from the fast development ofsociety, science, technology and economy.
