the omission of are will create ambiguity
favored may have a parallelism with random， both modifying the products of natural selection

that is not what the sentence is trying to say

我倒觉得是，but后面应该跟完整的clause，需要有谓语be，不然就成了同位语了。

重点在于simply这个副词，如果没有are，那么这个副词就是多余的，所以必须有are，如果题目没有副词simply，后面直接就是名词的话，那就选没有are的选项，但是答案中没有，所以最好的就是把are留着。
