Q32:

A surge in new home sales and a drop in weekly unemployment claims suggest that the economy might not be as weak as some analysts previously thought.

  • claims suggest that the economy might not be as weak as some analysts previously thought

  • claims suggests that the economy might not be so weak as some analysts have previously thought

  • claims suggest that the economy might not be as weak as have been previously thought by some analysts

  • claims, suggesting about the economy that it might not be so weak as previously thought by some analysts

  • claims, suggesting the economy might not be as weak as previously thought to be by some analysts

  •    Answer:  a

    Gwd5-Q14:

Even though more money was removed out of stock funds in July as in any month since October 1987, sales of fund shares in July were not as low as an industry trade group had previously estimated.

  • as in any month since October 1987, sales of fund shares in July were not as low as

  • as had been in any other month since October 1987, sales of fund shares in July were not as low as what

  • than there was in any other month since October 1987, sales of fund shares in July were not as low as that which

  • than in any month since October 1987, sales of fund shares in July were not as low as

  • than in any other month since October 1987, sales of fund shares in July were not as low as what

  •    answer:e

第一题是be as weak as some analysts previously thought

第二题是were not as low as what an industry trade group had previously estimated

个人认为如果是than in any other month since October , sales of fund shares in July were not as low as, 少what会更好些。

    Just for your reference.

Actually, it is better to dispense with "what" in this structure. But I don't think it is wrong when "what" is not omited.

Therefore, due to the fact that the "other" is indispensible, choice E of Gwd5-Q14 should be correct.

More often than not, "what" seems more acceptable than when it is omitted to a tyro of GMAT. I guess  that in some other subjects ETS is likely to insert a mistake in the choice with "what" whereas the choice without "what" is the correct one. But this is not the case for Gwd5-Q14 . So probably the D without "what" is a trap for a veteran of GMAT .

    对了,还想问一下,as....as的结构如果是否定句,是不是可以not...so....as?在否定句中,so....as和as....as有没有哪个更优先?

    c中应该是has been 吧

    至于hades说的LZM上的省略, 我没有看过LZM, 不敢乱说, 希望大家可以查一查, 看看是否可以省略.

            C的时态肯定错,这里只能用过去时态

            另外前面大家说了,省略的是what,而不是economy

    作者: Avantasia    时间: 2005-5-9 19:08

    但是what=the thing that, 那这个thing又是什么? 应该就是Economy没错吧.

    楼上怎么那么肯定C的时态就错了? 请教.

    作者: 新手上路3    时间: 2005-5-9 22:22

             完成时表示动作thought在过去发生并持续时间(到现在)

             不能说那些专家一直持续的想经济不好,过去时态表明他们过去认为经济不好,合情合理

the thing 指the economy might be weak

C.the economy might not be as weak as have been

    C最根本的错误应该是have been吧?economy是单数,这里应该用has been吧?

而且as…thought/expected/estimated等表示如某某所想 是固定用法,OG上出现了无数次

A surge in new home sales and a drop in weekly unemployment claims suggest that the economy might not be as weak as some analysts previously thought.

  • claims suggest that the economy might not be as weak as some analysts previously thought

  • claims suggests that the economy might not be so weak as some analysts have previously thought

  • claims suggest that the economy might not be as weak as have been previously thought by some analysts

  • claims, suggesting about the economy that it might not be so weak as previously thought by some analysts

  • claims, suggesting the economy might not be as weak as previously thought to be by some analysts

  • ding, i have the same question too~

    c 是由于have been 的原因才不如A

    C should be "has been"

    agree with floor 9.

active tense is always better than passive tense, so if you are confusing between a and c, you can use this rule to choose.

    open to discuss
