133.In the past several years, astronomers have detected more than 80 massive planets, most of them as large or larger than Jupiter, which circle other stars.
(A) most of them as large or larger than Jupiter, which circle
(B) most of them as large or larger than Jupiter and circling
(C) most of them at least as large as Jupiter, circling
(D) mostly at least as large as Jupiter, which circleC
(E) mostly as large or larger than Jupiter, circling
我的理解是这个circling,不是状语成分,而是名词(80 massive planets)的修饰语,most of them at least as large as Jupiter是插入成分,Circling实际上不是逗号分隔开的V-ing,而是紧邻名词后的名词后置定语。

------

(D) mostly at least as large as Jupiter, which circleC
(E) mostly as large or larger than Jupiter, circling
我的理解是这个circling,不是状语成分,而是名词(most of them)的修饰语:句尾独立主格在逻辑层次上对应完整的主谓,句尾的独立主格对应的完整主谓其实就是“most of the detected massive planets are at least as large as Jupiter, circling other stars.”,其中circling修饰planets,符合3a)所述。
-- by 会员 jeffery2541 (2012/9/14 0:55:37)

SVO, non-essenial modifier, ving

yeap, i vote for this explanation

若按jeff说的做noun modifier,也不是修饰most of them,而是修饰jupiter...noun modifier没有verb modifier来得灵活
如果这样说,那么句子就无异于astronomers have detected more than 80 massive planets (, most of them at least as large as Jupiter,) circling other stars.

In the past several years, astronomers have detected more than 80 massive planets, most of them as large or larger than Jupiter, which circle other stars.
Jupiter, which),也可以修饰planets(... planets, ....., which)
而C选项
Jupiter, most of them at least as large as Jupiter, circling
3. A short non-essential phrase intervenes and is set off by commas.

可是,最后我在追问一个问题,circling说的是80 massive planets还是most of the 80 massive planets?

In the past several years, astronomers have detected more than 80 massive planets, most of them as large or larger than Jupiter, which circle other stars.
Jupiter, which),也可以修饰planets(... planets, ....., which)
而C选项
Jupiter, most of them at least as large as Jupiter, circling
3. A short non-essential phrase intervenes and is set off by commas.

Good catch, and that is what I don't like A.
Because of it look ambiguous for me when I read A.
There are two posibile antecedants of A
1) Jupiter, which ( of course, it look like ridiculus)
2) planets, ... , which
For C beause N, ving cannot modifier N so the 1st above posibility was eliminated. Only planets can be antecedant of ving.
Also pls ref Manhattan SC strategy guide:
3. A shortnon-essentialphrase intervenes and is set off by commas.
Right: Our system of Presidential elections favorsstates, such as Delaware, that by population are over-represented in the Electoral College.
The short phrasesuch as Delawaresneaks between the nounstatesand its modifierthat by population are over-represented in the Electoral College. There is nowhere else logical to put the phrasesuch as Delaware. Because this phrase is short, its insertion is acceptable.

如果这样说,那么句子就无异于astronomers have detected more than 80 massive planets (, most of them at least as large as Jupiter,) circling other stars.

我的理解是这个circling,不是状语成分,而是名词(most of them)的修饰语:句尾独立主格在逻辑层次上对应完整的主谓,句尾的独立主格对应的完整主谓其实就是“most of the detected massive planets are at least as large as Jupiter, circling other stars.”,其中circling修饰planets,符合3a)所述。

SVO, non-essenial modifier, ving

楼主 。关于这一点。 c) V-ing表示结果状语时,其没有单纯的逻辑主语,造成V-ing动作的原因是整个主句主谓描述的内容;
MAIN subject ..

48.Though called a sea, the landlocked Caspian is actually the largest lake on Earth, covering more than four times the surface area of its closest rival in size, North America’s Lake Superior.
