264. Scientists believe that unlike the males of most species of moth, the male whistling moths of Nambung, Australia, call female moths to them by the use of acoustical signals, but not olfactory ones, and they attract their mates during the day, rather than at night.

(A)  by the use of acoustical signals, but not olfactory ones, and they attract

(B)  by the use of acoustical signals instead of using olfactory ones, and attracting

(C)  by using acoustical signals, not using olfactory ones, and by attracting

(D)  using acoustical signals, rather than olfactory ones, and attract

(E)   using acoustical signals, but not olfactory ones, and attracting

In A and E, the comparison between most male moths and the male whistling moth is not clear>????????

The use of but not does not clearly convey that most other moths use olfactory signals

not,but not ,rather than 意思上有区别吗?

ETS经常用rather than,但也用过  but not和but,不是吗??

首先选项是比出来的,but not ,rather than 意思上的区别这里也就如og所说The use of but not does not clearly convey that most other moths use olfactory signals,而rather than does convey...

简单的判别: 在其它相同的情况下,公理rather than>instead of/but not/not通常是成立的。

我怎么记得是rather than > not but (but not?)>instead of呢?

应该是not…but… > …rather than… > instead of(出自石林语法)

并以大全352为证

In 1933 the rubber, clothing, and shipbuilding industries put into effect a six-hour workday, believing it a seeming permanent accommodation rather than a temporary expedient for what many observers thought was an economy made overproductive by advances in technology.

(A) believing it a seeming permanent accommodation rather than a temporary expedient for what many observers thought was

(B) believing it a seeming permanent accommodation instead of a temporary expedient for what many observers thought was

(C) believing that it was not a temporary expedient but a seeming permanent accommodation to what many observers thought of as a

(D) not as a temporary expedient but as a seemingly permanent accommodation to what many observers thought wasD

(E) not as a temporary expedient but believing it a seemingly permanent accommodation for what many observers thought

以下是引用三脚猫在2005-1-20 0:43:00的发言:

Personally, the above example can not be convincing enough to prove the rule, described as"not…but… > …rather than… > instead of(出自石林语法)". So I am still confused about the problem.

那有没有结论阿,应该是哪个优先于哪个阿??

并不矛盾吧,A/E是:but not,石林和我在新东方时记得是:not...but,but not应该强调的不是比较.

请NN指正.

don't bother "but not", "rather than" or whatsoever. The key here is "ATTRACT"!
