OG12 CR 89 求赐教！！！
89. Since it has become known that several of a bank’s top executives have been buying shares in their own
bank, the bank’s depositors, who had been worried by rumors that the bank faced impending fi nancial collapse,
have been greatly relieved. They reason that, since top executives evidently have faith in the bank’s fi nancial
soundness, those worrisome rumors must be false. Such reasoning might well be overoptimistic（conclusion）, however, since
corporate executives have been known to buy shares in their own company in a calculated attempt
to dispel negative rumors about the company’s health.
In the argument given, the two boldfaced portions play which of the following roles?

答案选A，我选D。我做这类题的时候一般是先找出Conclusion，我觉得“Such reasoning might well be overoptimistic ” 这句是conclusion，因为这是作者的观点，但是如果按照这样来做为什么A说第一个boldface是支持conclusion的？是不是我找错conclusion了？如果是这样conclusion在哪里？另外D为什么不对？

你找的conclusion没有错~只不过A选项并没有说第一个boldface是支持conclusion的，只是说第一个boldface支持“一个conclusion”，这“一个conclusion”应该是“ the bank’s depositors, who had been worried by rumors that the bank faced impending fi nancial collapse,
have been greatly relieved”
这段文字的结构是，事实1->结论1<-原因1；结论2（反对结论1）<-原因2
这种结构在BF题里面还是挺常见的，很多argument的最终“结论”就是反驳“第一个结论”阿，所以你不能看到conclusion这个词，就默认是这个argument的最终结论

另外我还有一个地方不懂，第一个boldface如果是像A说的那样是支持一个conclusion，那他是支持哪一个Conclusion？我觉得第一个boldface是一个事实，文章都是围绕它argue的，看不出它是支持哪一方吧？我问这个问题的原因是我做了OG12 CR 79(同OG13 CR 78)，这个题跟89是类似的，但是答案的一个选项明确指明了开头的fact是支持哪一个观点的，但是我跟89一样看不出到底是有支持哪一方的倾向

(c）选项的答案把它纠正为The first had been used to support a conclusion that the argument rejects; 我觉得看不出是支持哪一方吧

同一个argument里面有两个结论互反的情况吗？只有intermediate conclusion和final conclusion吧，而且是intermediate conclusion推出final conclusion的。一个argument，一个conclusion。

这道题看来大家都对哪个是conclusion产生疑惑，我两次做两次错，而且两次都在看到正确答案的时候心中喊了一句“what？”照正确答案A来看，能做conclusion的是They reason that, since top executives evidently have faith in the bank’s fi nancial
soundness, those worrisome rumors must be false.

但是疑问又来了，conclusion是作者的观点，这个argument作者的观点是Such reasoning might well be overoptimistic。

混论一片。。。等待大牛出来解释啊！！！！

if argument could be either "depositors reason that since executives have faith, rumor is false" or "the depositors' reasoning is overoptimistic", then D could also be the choice?

could anyone help explain the problem with D please??

看了好几遍Og的解释，终于恍然大悟。D选项错误有2出，都是围绕2nd bf的：（1）认为大众解读过于乐观并不是整个argument seeks to establish的内容，整个para的结构是高层持有股票—arguement 1/argument 2，author没有takes sides，不是推翻1同意，只是客观阐述；（2）直接翻译这个bf是说“高层持有股票是因为大家都知道他们会在某些时刻持有股票以对抗negative news”...逻辑有问题吧。。所以排除D/E

——并不是argument seeks to establish the explanation，反了。
正确应该是the explanation seeks to establish the argument.

怎么会是论证去establish 解释呢
应该是通过解释来论证自己的观点
主语和宾语反了！

受楼上启发我又仔细得读了OG的解释，感觉搞懂了这道题。这里关键是对explanation的理解，乍一看DE选项，会以为题目的意思是BF2给出了对作者的结论的解释，但这样翻译就把主语和宾语弄反了。结合DE选项对BF1的描述就可以知道，explanation在这里是指“如何解释高管买股票这件事”。那么DE选项的含义就是，BF2是作者对这件事的解释，并且是seek to establish的，也可以理解成conclusion。但根据原文可以看出，作者认为BF2是高管买股票的一种可能的解释，并非100%的肯定，至少不是conclusion。所以排除DE选项。

第一个conclusion说的是depositor他们自己的conclusion。
