Mayor Delmont’s critics complain about the jobs that were lost in the city under Delmont’s leadership.  Yet the fact is that not only were more jobs created than were eliminated, but the average pay for these new jobs has been higher than the average pay for jobs citywide every year since Delmont took office.  So there can be no question that throughout Delmont’s tenure the average paycheck in this city has been getting steadily bigger.

Which of the following, if true, most strengthens the argument in the advertisement?

  1. The average pay for jobs created in the city during the past three years was higher than the average pay for jobs created in the city earlier in Mayor Delmont’s tenure.

  2. Average pay in the city was at a ten-year low when Mayor Delmont took office.

  3. Some of the jobs created in the city during Mayor Delmont’s tenure have in the meantime been eliminated again. ???

  4. The average pay for jobs eliminated in the city during Mayor Delmont’s tenure has been roughly equal every year to the average pay for jobs citywide.

  5. The average pay for jobs in the city is currently higher than it is for jobs in the suburbs surrounding the city.

Agree A.

en.... I think the answer should be D.

The average pay for jobs during the past three years was higher than the average pay for jobs earlier in Mayor Delmont’s tenure.

The average pay for jobs during the past three years was higher than the average pay for jobs earlier in Mayor Delmont’s tenure.

Pay attention to the words highlight above, here the past three years and earlier should be the different time, usually tenure means four years, so A compared the average pay in MD's later tenture with MD's earlier. According to A, we can concluded that the average paycheck in MD's tenture has been getting bigger. Thus A strengthens the conclusion.

D can not support the conclusion, it compared the average pay for jobs eliminated to the average pay for jobs citywide, and got roughly equivalence result every year. So D is irrelevant choice.

Leeon: 你看,如果 D 不对的话,假设 average pay for jobs eliminated in the city = $1,000,000,被裁员 1 人。

the average pay for jobs citywide = $500

原文:not only were more jobs created than were eliminated, but the average pay for these new jobs has been higher than the average pay for jobs citywide every year since Delmont took office.

the average pay for these new jobs = $ 1000,

So there can be no question that throughout Delmont’s tenure the average paycheck in this city has been getting steadily bigger. ?

Joe11, U should consider the possibility that the average pay for jobs eliminated in the city less than the average pay for jobs citywide.

This is GWD6-14.

Joe11, u're right, obviously the answer is D.

A is irrelevant choice. For A compared the average salary created later with that created earlier, it does not contribute the conclusion.
