按照你的理解还原that of earlier works，就是records of the earlier works，根据unlike/like的语法规则，它对应的是主句的主语（而非宾语），Blassingame’s innovative study。你觉得语义上对应吗？records和study，一个是记录，是实意名词；一个是研究，是抽象名词。这不符合unlike/like的语法规则。

更重要的是，你把that理解为records从全句中找不到依据，属于过分推演。
