Q17:

Fossils of a whale that beached on an African shore more than a million years ago and was subsequently butchered by hominids have been recovered by paleontologists.

A. that beached on an African shore more than a million years ago and was subsequently butchered by hominids have

B. that beached on an African shore more than a million years ago and then was subsequently butchered by hominids has

C. that beached on an African shore more than a million years ago, which was subsequently butchered by hominids, has

D. having been beached on an African shore more than a million years ago and subsequently butchered by hominids, have

E. having beached on an African shore more than a million years ago and then subsequently were butchered by hominids have

但a中,beached 和was subsequently butchered 明显不对称啊,beached不会是一个主动动作吧?

beach [transitive]
1. to pull a boat onto the shore away from the water
2. if a whale beaches itself or is beached, it swims onto the shore and cannot get back in the water

但是如a number of sth.

另外, 如果想加上that, 是否要变成" , that was..."?

beached和was并列,都是that的谓语.

That beached........................and was....................................

Fossils of a whale that beached on an African shore more than a million years ago and was subsequently butchered by hominids have been recovered by paleontologists.

感觉如果变成" , and was..."

要变也只能变成: ,and that was....

感觉如果变成" , and was..."

没必要加that啊;变成“,and was”更不必要。

A:正确

B:感觉then与subsequently重复;has主谓一致错

C:then与subsequently重复;has主谓一致错;which从句不简洁

E:having been不好;then与subsequently重复;were主谓一致错

d and e 中,having 的使用没有合理性,因为,beatched more than a million years ago,明显是过去的时间,应该用过去时态.

但是Fossils of a whale 的中心词是fossils复数,为何不是用were而是was呢?

39-   Scientists have recently discovered what could be the largest and oldest living organism on Earth, a giant fungus that is an interwoven filigree of mushrooms and rootlike tentacles
spawned by a single fertilized spore some 10,000 years ago and extending for more than 30 acres in the soil of a Michigan forest.

Fossils of a whale that beached on an African shore more than a million years ago and was subsequently butchered by hominids have been recovered by paleontologists.

C.   that beached on an African shore more than a million years ago, which was subsequently butchered by hominids, has

Puritan fanatics brought to civil and military affairs a coolness of judgment and mutability of purpose that some writers have though inconsistent with their religious zeal, but which was in fact a natural outgrowth of it.

(A) but which was in fact a natural outgrowth of it

(B) but which were in fact a natural outgrowth of it

(C) but which were in fact natural outgrowths of it

(D) but it was in fact a natural outgrowth of themC

(E) which was in fact a natural outgrowth of it
