Q22:

Charles Lindbergh, for his attempt at a solo transatlantic flight, was very reluctant to have any extra weight on his plane, he therefore refused to carry even a pound of mail, despite being offered $1,000 to do so.

  1. Charles Lindbergh, for his attempt at a solo transatlantic flight, was very reluctant to have any extra weight on his plane, he therefore

  2. When Charles Lindbergh was attempting his solo transatlantic flight, being very reluctant to have any extra weight on his plane, he

  3. Since he was very reluctant to carry any extra weight on his plane when he was attempting his solo transatlantic flight, so Charles Lindbergh

  4. Being very reluctant to carry any extra weight on his plane when he attempted his solo transatlantic flight was the reason that Charles Lindbergh

  5. Very reluctant to have any extra weight on his plane when he attempted his solo transatlantic flight, Charles Lindbergh

答案是E  我选A

我的疑问时 attempt 当动词或名词 时不是要加 to 吗?

有attempt(v)+名词 这种用法吗?

那么请问A那里不好 ?

只有当名词时加 at+名词 可以

记得OG也有考过attempt 都有加 to 阿

下面是LDOCE 的解释

attempt 1  noun

- All attempts to control inflation have failed.
- The protesters  made no attempt  to resist arrest.

-  In an attempt to  diffuse the tension I suggested that we break off for lunch.
  attempt at (doing) something

- her feeble attempt at humour
  at the first/second etc attempt
- She passed her driving test at the first attempt.
  assassination/suicide/murder attempt

2  an attempt on somebody's life

an act of trying to kill someone, especially someone famous or important

attempt 2  verb

[transitive]

1  to try to do something, especially something difficult

attempt to do something

- In this chapter I will attempt to explain what led up to the revolution.

- Weather conditions prevented them from attempting the jump.

A中出现run-on错误;

B中being多余,逻辑修饰;

C中since-so的冗余;

D中的逻辑表达实在是不符合语法习惯(不够简洁),看着就痛苦;

E中没问题;只是attempt at (doing) sth,在SC中很少见而已;

至于attempt,GMAT中更倾向于使用attempt to do;但attempt at (doing) sth (也是一种正确的表达)在GMAT文中可以见到;在没有前者的情况下,后者也是可以的;

答案不一定是最好的,但在选项中一定有一个相对好的;

不好意思再问几个问题

1. 那里Run-on呢? 是要加 and 吗? 但A 的therefore 不是也可

from Longman : We therefore recommend the abolition of this rule.

2.我想attemp at 是attempt当名词时才这样用吧 至于我之前attempt(v)+名词 这种用法应该可以 但如果有to的答案更好

下面是OG例题

227. Judicial rules in many states require that the identities of all prosecution witnesses are made known to defendants so they can attempt to rebut the testimony, but the Constitution explicitly requires only that the defendant have the opportunity to confront an accuser in court.

(A) that the identities of all prosecution witnesses are made known to defendants so they can attempt to rebut

(B) that the identities of all prosecution witnesses be made known to defendants so that they can attempt to rebut

(C) that the defendants should know the identities of all prosecution witnesses so they can attempt a rebuttal of

(D) the identities of all prosecution witnesses should be made known to defendants so they can attempt rebutting(B)

(E) making known to defendants the identities of all prosecution witnesses so that they can attempt to rebut

OG对C D attempt的解释为:

The phrase attempt to rebut is more idiomatic than the phrases that replace it in C and D.

这题都没to 所以只好选个最好的

但我还是不太懂A 的run on 和 therefore的用法可以说明白点吗

谢谢回答!!

作者: G_KEVIN    时间: 2004-10-5 15:09

therefore是副词,不可以连两个句子;sb was reluctant to do sth, he therefore的结构就是两个独立的句子,而没有任何连词,所以是错误的;

attempt to既可以做名词词组,又可以做动词词组;

attempt at只作名词词组;

for instance: if you attempt to do sth,you should ......

if you make an attempt to do sth, you should....

despite  attempt at sth , sb still........

同问,这里的Very reluctant to have any extra weight on his plane when he attempted his solo transatlantic flight,

A:run-on sentence

B:was attempting 时态不对;being very reluctant 不好,而且有squinting modifier之嫌

D:改变句子结构,重心转移

E:正确;BTW,very reluctant不能当独立主格吗?

作者: yuyingchao    时间: 2005-7-29 13:20

The structure of E can be inferred from choice (C). Therefore, we can modify (E) to the following sentence:
Since he was very reluctant to have any extra weight on his plane when he attempted his solo transatlantic flight, Charles Lindbergh refused to.....
因为...(since省略, he主詞相同省略, was/being省略)

I think that the structure of E can be called elliptical phrases or participial phrases, which use to modify the subject in the main clause.

By the way, I found some sentences to illustrate the usage of “attempt + Noun” in Cambridge dictionary:

attempt
verb [T]
to try to do something, especially something difficult:
[+ to infinitive] He attempted to escape through a window.
He attempted a joke, but no one laughed.
There's no point in even attempting an explanation - he'll never listen

我觉得不是独立主格结构,因为在reluctant前面没有名词或是代词等做逻辑主语。

这个结构更象是过去分词放句首的用法,因为过去分词在某种意义上演变为了形容词,而这里是形容词放句首,这两种用法很象;我认为大家应该注意reluctant to........和主句主语在逻辑上是否搭配,即charles lindvergh was very reluctant to。。。。

不知大家理解我意思没

好棒!这么一说清楚多了,A项VS E项,主要是在逗号前后的两个部分,

A:前后都是完整主谓的句子,therefore副词,不能连接

E:只有后面的部分是完整句,不出现句子间需要连词连接的问题

Charles Lindbergh, for his attempt at a solo transatlantic flight, was very reluctant to have any extra weight on his plane, he therefore refused to carry even a pound of mail, despite being offered $1,000 to do so.

  2. When Charles Lindbergh was attempting his solo transatlantic flight, being very reluctant to have any extra weight on his plane, he

关于E的语法现象总算找到了根据

章振邦语法第1154页; 无动词分句

由形容词加不定式构成无动词分句

Glad to accept, the boy nodded his agreement

Anxious to arive before Christmas,he went home by air.
