154. In 1791 Robert Carter III, one of the wealthiest plantation owners in Virginia, stunned his family, friends, and neighbors by filing a deed of emancipation, setting free the more than 500 slaves who were legally considered his property.

I want to know the structure of "setting free the more than 500 slaves who were legally considered his property."

"stuned....... and set.." or "by filing .........and setting... "

which one is correct??

In my opinion,I think the structure is "stuned....... and set.."

Howevere, it seems change the original meaning,and means that he stunned is family first and then set free the salaves.

I think a reasonable meaning is "set free........ first and then stunned latter.........."

So I confused!!!!

by是介词后面要接动名词或名词，所以是filling，后面的setting是对前面的内容作进一步的解释，不是与filling的并列结构！！

You mean "setting free the more than 500 slaves who were legally considered his property." modify "deed of emancipation"or "filing"?

好像不是吧，确实是有consider as 一说的呀，consider as, consider to be true,consider of,当然这里面的as,to be true,of,都是可以省略的。consider as 可以理解为被当作的意思，例如，consider as the favorite.所以，在这里，我非常不能理解，为什么不用consider as.因为根据文中意思，指的就是，这些黑奴被视为他的私有财产啊~~~~~~~
