Competition for high grades seriously limits the quality of learning at all levels of education.

The statement stresses on an absolute fact that we should deny the advantage of competing for high scores. Nevertheless, it is grades that determine the judgment.

Admittedly, high grade will never be our most indispensible pursuit during our education. Instead, high grade is just a kind of labels to emphasis on how well we understand the knowledge teachers told us, which can’t certainly on behave of all levels of education we acquired. For instance, if you are faced with final examination in your semester, you may pay all your attention to this test for sake of a high score. Unfortunately, you have to give up other activities to squeeze time for preparation. Thus, competing impetuously for high grades without improving other aspects of abilities will eventually lead to a limitation of learning aggregately.

However, the statement above demonstrates so absolutely on the disadvantage of competition for high grades that the fact it assumes is still questionable. In China, the government takes use of Collage Entrance Examination to match students with different qualified universities. What’s more, the grades students get during the examination are the only criteria considered by the Admission Committee. Because Chinese education system believes that the grades reflect all levels of education and the examination is a comparatively equal way to distribute students, we can therefore at least agree with that competition for high grades will partly promote students to enforce their all levels of education in order to meet the requirements of universities.

Personally speaking, whether competition for high grades will seriously limit the quality of learning at all levels of education depends on the definition of grades. If grades stand only for scores students get on their papers and are decided just according to the performance in a short period or a narrow aspect, competition for those will be apt to limit the general development. Because grades don’t mean students are omnipotent and furthermore they will also take a lot of time which can be used for other learning programs, grades may actually lead to a catastrophic result. On the other hand, if grades mean aggregated ability, then we can correspondingly compete to improve our levels of education in order to get higher grades which means admitted by others. At this time, competing for high grades will stimulate students to improve their entire educations.

All in all, we can’t certainly veto the competition without clarifying the definition of grades. (403 words)
