标题: Argument 62 大家来拍拍吧~~
Argument 62 题目:
The following appeared in a memo from the director of a large group of hospitals.

"In a laboratory study of liquid antibacterial hand soaps, a concentrated solution of UltraClean produced a 40 percent greater reduction in the bacteria population than did the liquid hand soaps currently used in our hospitals. During a subsequent test of UltraClean at our hospital in Workby, that hospital reported significantly fewer cases of patient infection than did any of the other hospitals in our group. Therefore, to prevent serious patient infections, we should supply UltraClean at all hand-washing stations throughout our hospital system."

提纲:
1. 仅仅在workby一个地方做实验不一定能推广,可能环境不同
2. patient infection 不等于 less bacteria
3. 还可能有其他种类的肥皂比UltraClean强

Write a response in which you examine the stated and/or unstated assumptions of the argument. Be sure to explain how the argument depends on these assumptions and what the implications are for the argument if the assumptions prove unwarranted.

The director states that UltraClean should be used in all hand-washing stations throughout their hospital system. He provides evidence that this kind of soap is more likely to kill bacteria and the test in the Workby indicates that UltraClean is excellent and suitable in the hospitals. The reasoning progress seems good; however, some assumptions aren't presented in this argument, which may make the whole recommendation unwarranted.

In the first place, the director claims that the result of the test in Workby shows a reduction of cases of patient infection than other hospitals. This evidence assumes that all the surroundings except for the soap they use are the same, which will make the comparison reasonable and sound. Nevertheless, the author doesn't claim it. This lack of assumption will significantly weaken the argument since there is a big chance that the total number of bacteria is much less than hospitals before a use of soap, no matter UltraClean or other types of soaps. To enhance his argument, the director has to provide more evidence supporting the reasoning progress such as the total amount of bacteria is approximately same as each other in the test.

Additionally, the director asserts the facts that patient infection cases are significantly reduced when the use of UltraClean comes. The author wants to prove that UltraClean can kill bacteria more efficiently. Even though the bacteria amount are the same both in Workby and hospitals, the author failed to build the connection between less patient infection and less bacteria. The author doesn't say that the infections are the only and exact indicator of the ability of killing bacteria. In this way, the argument seems tenuous and less convincing. To make this recommendation less faulty and less destructible, assumptions like the comparability of two infection rates have to be referred in the memo.

Finally, granted that the problems I presented above are solved by the director, the author doesn't make all the comparisons between UltraClean and other soaps except for the soap used in hospitals now. There is a big probability that there is another type of soap named SuperClean can do much better than UltraClean, which makes the suggestion of using this specific type of soap un unconvincing and even absurd. To make the argument more persuasive, I suggest that the director add more evidence indicating that there is no other soaps alternative or other kinds of soaps do worse than UltraClean.

To sum up, the author's suggestion to the system of hospitals is seemingly good, regardless some of the flaws in the argument. But it is those flaws will weaken the argument a lot or even prove the argument unwarranted. To solve these problems, the director has to provide more evidence to make the assumptions it based much more stable. Only by this way can the argument persuade a shift of soap in all hand-washing stations throughout the hospital system.
