148. The following recommendation was made by the president and administrative staff of Grove College, a private institution, to the college's governing committee.
We recommend that Grove College preserve its century-old tradition of all-female education rather than admit men into its programs. It is true that a majority of faculty members voted in favor of coeducation, arguing that it would encourage more students to apply to Grove. But 80 percent of the students responding to a survey conducted by the student government wanted the school to remain all female, and over half of the alumnae who answered a separate survey also opposed coeducation. Keeping the college all female will improve morale among students and convince alumnae to keep supporting the college financially.

Write a response in which you examine the stated and/or unstated assumptions of the argument. Be sure to explain how the argument depends on these assumptions and what the implications are for the argument if the assumptions prove unwarranted.
2. 作者指出all female will improve morale,和convince alumnae to keep supporting,没有任何证据证明。

In the argument above, the author recommends that the Grove College should preserve its century-old tradition of all-female education. It seems at first glance to be an obvious conclusion based on the surveys of students and alumnae. However, close scrutiny of the argument, rife with holes of assumptions, reveals how groundless the recommendation is.

First and foremost, the argument is on the basis of two surveys whose results are deserved to suspect. First, the former survey is conducted by the student government and the choice of respondents is also needed to be further considered. As the student government is a organization of college, they are managed by college, which would be easier for them to give a positive comment on the college. So do the alumnae, they graduate from the college and have a deep affection on their almamater. Then they may have the inclination to keep the college as before rather than admit men into the college. To make the survey more reliable, it is necessary to expend the scope of respondents, such as inquiring into the scholars, experts and the parents of the students.

In addition, the assumption—all female would improve moral and convince alumnae to keep supporting the college financially—is warranted. The author haven’t give any information to substantiate the notion. The improvement of moral depends on the culture of students’ good qualities and has little connection with the gender. Additionally, the financial support of alumnae is influenced by many factors such as the score of the students, the employment of graduates and so on. It could not determined only by the pattern of all-female. Unless the author could give evidence to prove the decisive effect of all female, the notion above is not convincing.

Finally, even though all the foregoing assumptions are justifiable, the author has not considered the influence of all female. Whether the old tradition is still suitable for the new century, whether it adapt to the need of social development and whether it would lead to some problems , are not considered in this argument. Perhaps the tradition has caused harmful effect on the students and they may have the difficulty to adjust to the change of social roles. So whether the pattern of enrolling students is appropriate is unknown.

In summary, the recommendation to keep the century-old tradition to keep all female education is plausible to fit in with the development of the college, but it based on the unwarranted assumptions. To corroborate the argument, the author should assure the credibility of the survey and clear the relationship between all female and the moral and alumnae’s financial support. Besides, it needs to be proved that the old convention have not cause some disadvantages.

好。不过我感觉,当你在写关于保持女生制度能维持道德水准的时候,你可以试着分析下,题目这种结论的依据,并指出这种依据的荒唐
