There is a debate about the role of a university professor. Some hold the opinion that a university professor should focus time on doing research while others insist on the viewpoint that the central role of a professor is to educate students. As far as I’m concerned, the role of a professor should be a marriage between doing research and educating students.
A University is a better place for professors to do research, since there are many sorts of books to refer to and government funds a university annually to encourage its professors to conduct experiments and do some creative researches. as we all know that a university today is no longer a place for students to learn knowledge, but also a place to provide ideas, creativeness and motivations to companies, making those companies more competitive and more powerful in the global scale. If we want all these to come true, we should encourage professors to keep doing their researches.
So important it is for a professor to do research, but we should not live under the illusion that the role of a professor has been changed. They still assume the responsibility to educate students. We cannot image a class without a professor. The class will be a total mess and students there will do whatever they want to do. Admittedly, some students have great ability to self-educate themselves, but how about other students? And although students can obtain knowledge through E-learning, how about students who have no access to the internet? If the role of educating students is eliminated, a university will not act as a university again, but as an institution of research.
To sum up what I have mentioned above, there is a need for professors in universities to keep a balance between doing research and educating students. The two roles of a professor should be given equal emphasis and only by keeping this balance can professors benefit not only students, but the society as a whole.
