如果按照上面的翻译，那F就是afford动作的发出者呀...

afford在此处的含义是 to provide and make something available,翻译成中文就是 提供，给予。这样的话，就可以明白AFFORD的动作是谁发出来的吧

1)affording 理解为担负更合适，句意理解为，（由于）摩洛哥担负起法国接近G海峡的战略角色，摩洛哥也是法国的兴趣所在。。。。
所以，句首主谓一致。但需高清的是，句子后半部分的逻辑主语是法国，without it their grip on Algeria would never be secure，中their是法国的。

逻辑意思上，也应该是Morocco afforded ... 而不是“French afford...”
