OG Verbal SC 92
Schistosomiasis, a disease caused by a parasitic worm, is prevalent in hot, humid climates, and it has become more widespread as irrigation projects have enlarged the habitat of ( the freshwater snails that are the parasite's hosts for part of its life cycle. )
(A) the freshwater snails that are the parasite's hosts for part of its life cycle
(B) the freshwater snails that are the parasite's hosts in part of their life cycle
(C) freshwater snails which become the parasite's hosts for part of its life cycles
(D) freshwater snails which become the hosts of the parasite during the parasite's life cycle
(E) parasite's hosts, freshwater snails which become their hostsduring their life cycles
答案是A。
The preposition IN is inappropriate for expressing duration; the plural possessive pronoun THEIR does not agree with the singular antecedent PARASITE.
1. B里面的 in part of their life cycle 如果是修饰snails的话, in的用法应该没问题吧。
A is B's host for B's life用for. 如果想表达duration in A's life, 应该用A is B's host for A's life 还是 A is B's host in A's life ?
3. A选项里面的parasite's hosts for part of its life cycle貌似和manhattan GMAT SC里的概念不一致。

我认为哈,its life cycle 中的its 是指代the parasite

+1
pronoun ambiguity is not an absolute rule
the gmat will tolerate pronoun ambiguity when both of the following are satisfied:
1. the intended referent makes much more sense than do the other possible referents,
and
2. the intended referent is PARALLEL TO THE PRONOUN, and the other possible referents are NOT parallel to the pronoun.

in仅仅表示时空的界定,比如 in 2012, in China
This product was developed for the Chinese market.
这道题也是这么理解的,寄居标志着part of its life cycle
如果用in,如OG所说expressing duration
这个能读出来的,联系全句的意思,是个因果关系,前文关心的是"a disease caused by a parasitic worm",因此这个pronoun只有指代parasite's才能make sense.

this is a misinterpretation of the "possessive poison rule".
that rule ONLY forbids a NON-POSSESSIVE PRONOUN from standing for a POSSESSIVE NOUN.
ALL other combinations --
(1) non-possessive noun, non-possessive pronoun;
(2) non-possessive noun, possessive pronoun;
(3) possessive noun, possessive pronoun --
are OK.
this is case (3).
in general, you are better off forgetting all about the "possessive poison" rule.
it has so far been the deciding factor in exactly zero official problems.
worse yet, it is well known to confuse people (look at what happened to you here!)

Schistosomiasis, a disease caused by a parasitic worm, is prevalent in hot, humid climates, and it has become more widespread as irrigation projects have enlarged the habitat of the freshwater snails that are the parasite's hosts for part of the snails' life cycle.
因为全句关心的是:a disease caused by a parasitic worm
我们只关心worm's life cycle。那么,snails' life cycle,从逻辑上看,就纯粹是out of scope.
1. their life cycle 不合逻辑,应该cycles

In B and E, their (plural) cannot serve to refer to the worm (singular).
Eliminate B and E.
A life cycle is defined as the series of stages through which a living thing passes during the course of its life.
A living thing cannot have more than one life cycle.
Incorrect: a tiger's life cycles
Correct: a tiger's LIFE CYCLE
Thus, in C and D, life cycles (plural) does not convey the intended meaning.
Eliminate C and D.
