The Department of Mechanical Engineering and Mechanics has given careful consideration to your application for graduate study but is unable to offer you admission at this time. Although our Department is prepared to act favorably on your application to our graduate program, it is our policy to offer admission only to those students who have full financial support for the duration of their program. In the event that you are able to arrange full financial support for your entire proposed program in the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Mechanics from your government, an industrial concern, or personal funds, and if our allocated number of admissions has not been exceeded at the time of receipt of proof of support, we would be pleased to proceed with a formal offer of admission.
If you were to provide proof of support, please be aware of the fact that all incoming students who do not receive full financial support from the University for their first year of study are enrolled in the Master of Engineering program. Although you have indicated an intent to pursue the PhD degree, this is possible only if you have identified an advisor. While you are pursuing a Master of Engineering degree, you may petition to transfer to the PhD program as soon as you have identified an advisor, who agrees to supervise your dissertation research. In the event that an advisor is not available, you will continue with the Master of Engineering program. Please be advised that our faculty have many commitments, and the availability of faculty for research supervision depends on the specialty within the area of mechanical engineering and the ongoing advisory commitments of the faculty member.
If, however, you are able to provide proof of support, and you can identify an advisor and secure his written agreement to supervise your dissertation before you come to Lehigh, you may enroll in the PhD program when you begin your studies.
We want you to know that your application will be accessible for review by our faculty, who will contact you if any financial support sources should become available within the University. Please be aware that financial support is very limited and that there are a large number of highly-qualified applicants.
