Scientists believe that unlike the males of most species of moth, the male whistling moths of Numbing, Australia, call female moths to them by the use of acoustical signals, but not olfactory ones, and they attract their mates during the day, rather than at night.
A.    by the use of acoustical signals, but not olfactory ones, and they attract
B.    by the use of acoustical signals instead of using olfactory ones, and attracting
C.    by using acoustical signals, not using olfactory ones, and by attracting
D.    using acoustical signals, rather than olfactory ones, and attract
E.     using acoustical signals, but not olfactory ones, and attracting

正确是D,想问一下D里面using acoustical signals前面为什么不加by呢,在这里using...是什么结构呀?是否是伴随状语?<br />谢谢各位了!!!</font></font></font></font>

谢谢了,亲~
但我还是有点疑问:
你的意思是说using在这里是作状语,那如果在using前面加逗号句子还是正确的吗?
就想这个句子一样:A one-million-year-old skull has been found in the Afar region of Eritrea,
indicating
modern humans developed much earlier than previously thought

这个句子是分词引导的分句做伴随状语伴随前面整句导致的结果

而这个结果依然是前面出现过的动词——found导致的。

LZ去看一下manhattan的verb modifier那章,听听赵丽关于分词的那几节课,应该就不会有这些疑问啦

亲,谢谢咯~~~

我去曼哈顿网站上看了看相关的“ing”修饰语的用法,看到RON的总结说:
if you have a present participial (-ing) modifier that follows a comma, it is unambiguously an adverbial modifier, which modifies the action of the preceding clause.

if there is no comma, then it's an adjective modifier that is committed to the immediately preceding noun.

examples:

james mistakenly turned off the highway, heading toward louisville
--> adverbial modifier.
this sentence means that james wound up going to louisville because of the wrong turn he made (i.e., he meant to go to, say, lexington instead).

james mistakenly turned off the highway heading toward louisville --> adjective modifier.
this sentence means that james didn't go to louisville, because he accidentally turned off the highway that goes to louisville.
