B的结构是 scientist attepmt to do，hoping hoping修饰scientist
句子想要表达的内容不一样，从语义上讲，B的结构更合理

不是优于的问题，是错了
in their attempt at cleaning and preserving
这里attempt at错了，应该选择attempt to do的用法，因为后面接的是动词
用attempt to clean and preserve
