正确答案是B，可是那个culminated即以。。告终已经是过去式了，那在这之前的began为什么不能用D中的过去完成时had begun呢，毕竟开始是在过去的过去吧？？

1、时态问题：过去完成时的使用要谨慎，要有明确的时间提示或是逻辑前后语义表明才能使用。具体知识点讲解：prep语法笔记-part1--->172、176、220（A选项）。manhattan记得也有讲解，但是抱歉偶对小曼亲不熟悉，LZ自己查一下吧~ o(╯□╰)o。

2、逻辑主语问题：句首Spanning，逻辑主语应该是career，从逻辑含义上分析，先排除AD了。建议LZ同学先从逻辑上理解句意之后，排除逻辑含义错误的句子；再从语法点分析。

Emily Dickinson’s letters to Susan Huntington Dickinson, which were written over a period beginning a few years before Susan’s marriage toEmily’s brotherand ending shortly before Emily’s death in 1886, outnumber ...

这里是不是begin 早于end，但是同样没有用perfect tense，原因在于：

（1）从平行角度，...beginning....and ending; began.....and cultivated...更好

（2）从时态上，过去完成时的目的在于 to clarify or emphasize the time sequence 时才用到的，这里begin和cultivate 的sequence不需要perfect tense。
