If you are willing to do research on the contemporary culture, is it the best idea to do it by searching for the young people’s fashions? Some people agreed, arguing that it is the modern fashion, such as various kinds of hair styles and clothes, that leads the modern culture. However, as far as I am concerned, the modern fashions young people pursued are something that make our society more extravagant, but not the things that totally reflect our society’s real culture.
But firstly I have to admit that the young people are necessary parts of the society, and to do research on their fashion styles could surely help us to know about our contemporary culture more or less. Also, the young people can adapt to the new things easier than the older ones, which leads the trend of the modern fashions. What’s more, young people grow up in a circumstance combined with their families, teachers, and fiends, and these are all social elements. So do some research on young men can be useful to understand the modern culture.
However, young people are only a small part of the society, and they can never stand for the whole social elements. A number of young people nowadays are fond of something very special, for example, the strange clothes, the yellow or red hair, and so on. These can not be considered as the symbol of our contemporary culture, but some vulgar products of the modern society. It is important that we should know clearly about what is the real contemporary culture. It is a compound, combined with the economy, technology, teaching, entertainments and so on. Which kind of person has made the most progress on these fields? The answer is definite, it is the adult. When a young person becomes an adult, their minds grow mature and they become more experienced. This will give adults a wide vision, help them make more achievements on every field. So generally speaking, it is the adult, but not the young man, that makes more contributions to the society.
Moreover, there exists another way to do research on the modern culture, which is more effective than looking for the modern fashions. It is to do research on the history and the classical cultures. We can always find the trace of classical cultures in our contemporary culture, because any culture existing nowadays comes from the cultures formed before. For example, a person has the obligation to look after their parents in China, no matter when he lives from past to nowadays, because Chinese people have been influenced by the Confucian thoughts. So we could easily draw a conclusion that in order do research on the modern cultures, we should look for the originality of each culture, and it is different among countries.
When we do research on a phenomenon, never shall we look at the facial phenomenon. We should always pay more attention to the truth and the originality. It is the same when we are to know about our contemporary culture.
