The author seem to agree the second idea. However, I tend to think that as we acquire more knowledge, things have become not only more comprehensible but only more complex. And they seem contradictory, but in fact they are consistent.
As we acquire more knowledge, we have known many fundamental principle about things which used to be mysterious. Consider lunar eclipse. In the ancient time people do not have enough knowledge to explicate the reason about lunar eclipse. And there arose numerous fabulous explanation about god and ghost. For example, the ancient Chinese thought that lunar eclipse was because that the heavenly dog swallowed the moon. However, now we know that the relative motion results to lunar eclipse, thus, lunar eclipse has been explicated very well and become more comprehensible. And numerous things like this are well explained with our increasing knowledge.
However, a series of more complex problems and questions have appeared. Still consider lunar eclipse. Now people have known that lunar eclipse is caused by the relative motion among the planets, however, what's the momentum to lead the planets to move?And how they move? People seems to begin to face these problems. In addition, with the increase of our knowledge and the development of technology, we now know that the nuclear could be used to be weapons and resources. Then we face another problem, should we research this new resource? And many things like this have occurred in our human beings.
Nevertheless, they are not mutually exclusive. In fact, World itself is always complex and mysterious.the levelsof complexity of the things never have a change. Because in the ancient time we do not have much knowledge, so we do not think so many things and problems, thus the world and things seem simple. but with the deeper understanding of things, we begin to be aware of the complexity of the things. However, one day when people acquire enough knowledge, things could not be complex any more, all the things would become comprehensible.
