119.When old buildings stand on ground that modernplanners feel could be better used for modern purposes, modern developmentshould be given precedence over the preservation of historic buildings.(不同意)

Write a response in which you discuss the extent to whichyou agree or disagree with the statement and explain your reasoning for theposition you take. In developing and supporting your position, you shouldconsider ways in which the statement might or might not hold true and explainhow these considerations shape your position.

With the explosive development of modernsociety, more and more lands are needed by the construction of cities. Thus, itis reasonable for the speaker to claim that the ground which old buildingsstand on should be used for modern development. I concede that moderndevelopment plays an important role in the progress of society. However, in myopinion, it is inappropriate for us to disregard the preservation of historicbuildings when grounds are needed for modern purposes.

Given the fact that economic prosperitybenefits our modern lives, and that constructions are the foundations ofeconomic prosperity, we have to admit that the grounds which old buildingsstand on should be used for modern developments sometimes. It is indisputablethat the prosperity of economy has dramatically changed our lives. We evencouldn`t imagine a world where there is no modern things such as mobile phones, computers, and modern vehicles. All of these things need the modern industries, and modern industries need enough places for their production. It is safely forus to believe that without enough places for modern development we won`t havemodern lives. Consider how Shenzhen city of China changed from a fishingvillage to a modern city with the modern development, old buildings were pulleddown and new building were built up. People in Shenzhen city lived modern livesand didn`t have to go fishing nowadays. In light of these, grounds should beused for modern development sometimes.

However, it is inappropriate for us todisregard the preservation of historic buildings even when ground could bebetter used for modern purposes. Admittedly, modern development benefits us alot, but the preservation of historic buildings is even more important thanthat in most instances. To begin with, lots of historic buildings have beendamage during the modern development. The historic buildings which always representthe culture of a city always convey the emotions of citizens. According to a recentsurvey, 86 percent of citizens of Beijing were unsatisfied with the authoritybehavior that government of Beijing city pulled down some old buildings tobuild shopping malls. These old buildings are not only the memories of theancestor of citizen but also one part of historic culture of Beijing. Withoutthese old things, a city will miss its connection between history and modern. However, people in modern lives often weight modern development more important thanpreservation of historic buildings, because they fail to realize that historywhich connects new and old is a mirror of our behaviors and emotions. Thus, history is like an old man telling us old stories of the city, which conductour behaviors and give us hope. A city without history is like a man withoutspirit.

Furthermore, some historic buildings notonly convey culture of a city but also have values for historic researches andchildren education. For example, the Washington monument which was built on1884 always reminds us the time when Washington devoted himself to thefoundation of the USA. We can imagine such an image that children stand beforethe Washington monument with the stories how Washington built their countrytold by the teacher, and then the adoration emerged from their mind encouragingthem to fight for their dreams. Without these buildings, education lackspecific materials, and historic research lack evidences.

Moreover, preservation of historicbuildings doesn`t have to preclude modern development. In the contrary, preservation of historic buildings always benefits the prosperous of tourism, which is certainly one of the most booming parts of modern development. Nowadays, travel becomes so popular that millions of people go for national tours everyyear. It is indisputable that tourism has become a profit profession whichwould certainly benefit the economic development. Given the fact that historicbuildings are always popular for tourism, such as the Statue of Liberty, theBig Ben, and the Great Wall, we may safely draw a conclusion that preservationof historic buildings can benefit modern development in some respects.

In view of these, we may certainly draw a conclusionthat preservation of historic building plays an important part in our modernlife, and the preservation of old buildings should be prior to moderndevelopment if we take into account the already damage to them. It is a factthat much of old buildings are pulled down and little of them are preserved. Consequently,I hold that it is inappropriate for us to disregard the preservation ofhistoric buildings when grounds are needed for modern purposes.
