为什么不是E,d 中的they有指代不清的嫌疑，但不知e中 not like...but(like) wanton.... 中的like 可不可以省？

D中they不会有歧义，因为同一个句子里的代词指代要一致，由前半句已经确定they指代customs inspectors。

not... , but...结构中not 和 but后面的内容一定要对称，特别是这里like是介词，更不能省略。例外只有弱语气词如just。
