2,Whena caterpillar emerges from the egg on a tree branch, it immediately climbsupward until it finds a leaf bud to eat. Biologists thought that this behavior displayed an innate tendency tomove in the direction opposite to the pull of gravity. In a recent experiment, a strong light sourcewas placed at the bottom of a tree, and caterpillars, after hatching, climbeddownward.
Which of the following hypotheses is best supported bythe statements given?
(A)Caterpillars have an innate tendency to move in the direction of gravity. (B)Newly hatched caterpillars are unaqble to see in the dark. (C)Newly hatched caterpillars move towards the strongest light source in theenvironment. (D)Newly hatched caterpillars move toward the leaf bud nearest to them. (E)The eyes of newly hatched caterpillars become less sensitive to light overtime.
3,Parasiticwasps lay their eggs directly into the eggs of various host insects in exactlythe right numbers for any suitable size of host egg. If they laid too many eggs in a host egg, thedeveloping wasp larvae would compete with each other to the death for nutrientsand space. If too few eggs were laid, portions of the host egg would decay, killing the wasp larvae.
Which of the following conclusions can properly be drawnfrom the information above? (A)The size of the smallest host egg that a wasp could theoretically parasitizecan be determined from the wasp's egg-laying behavior. (B)Host insects lack any effective defenses against the form of predationpracticed by parasitic wasps. (C)Parasitic wasps learn from experience how many eggs to lay into the eggs ofdifferent host species. (D)Failure to lay enough eggs would lead to the death of the developing wasplarvae more quickly than would laying too many eggs. (E)Parasitic wasps use visual clues to calculate the size of a host egg.
4,Acompany's two divisions performed with remarkable consistency over the pastthree years: in each of those years, thepharmaceuticals division has accounted for roughly 20 percent of dollar salesand 40 percent of profits, and the chemicals division for the balance.

(B)The pharmaceuticals division has faced stiffer competition in its markets thanhas the chemicals division. (C)The chemicals division has realized lower profits per dollar of sales than hasthe pharmaceuticals division. (D)The product mix offered by each of the company's divisions has remainedunchanged. (E)Highly profitable products accounted for a higher percentage of the chemicalsdivision's sales than of those of the pharmaceuticals division.
5,Whena polygraph test is judged inconclusive, this is no reflection on theexaminee. Rather, such a judgment meansthat the test has failed to show whether the examinee was truthful oruntruthful. Nevertheless, employers willsometimes refuse to hire a job applicant because of an inconclusive polygraphtest result.
Which of the following conclusions can most properly bedrawn from the information above?
(A)Most examinees with inconclusive polygraph test results are in fact untruthful. (B)Polygraph tests should not be used by employers in the consideration of jobapplicants. (C)An inconclusive polygraph test result is sometimes unfairly held against theexaminee. (D)A polygraph test indicating that an examinee is untruthful can sometimes bemistaken. (E)Some employers have refused to consider the results of polygraph tests whenevaluating job applicants. 作者: torisea 时间: 2012-3-8 18:36
Bible解释(标白如下)
This is an intimidating problem at first glance. The terminology is complex and the problem appears to be based on difficult philosophical principles. First, analyze the structure of the argument: Premise: If something would have been justifiably regretted if it had occurred, then it is something that one should not have desired in the first place. Conclusion: Many forgone pleasures should not have been desired in the first place. Second, use the three steps for mechanistically solving Justify questions as described in this section. 1. Any “new” or “rogue” element in the conclusion will appear in the correct answer. “Many forgone pleasures” is a new element that appears only in the conclusion. Only answer choices (B), (C), and (D) contain “forgone pleasures,” and only answer choice (D) contains “many.” Thus, if forced to make a quick decision, answer choice (D) would be the best selection at this point in our analysis. And, fortunately, the technique is so powerful that this analysis does indeed yield the correct answer. Regardless, let’s continue. 2. Elements that are common to the conclusion and at least one premise, or to two premises, normally do not appear in the correct answer. “Should not have (been) desired in the first place” appears in both the premise and the conclusion. This element is not likely to appear in the correct answer choice. 3. Elements that appear in the premises but not the conclusion normally appear in the correct answer. “Justifiably regretted” appears in the premise but not the conclusion. Only answer choices (B) and (D) contain “justifiably regretted.” Once you become used to examining the elements of the argument, the analysis above can be made very quickly. The method also correctly reveals answer choice (D) as correct with a minimum of effort.作者: qiuhua01234567 时间: 2012-3-8 20:15
