Faced with the recurrence of natural disasters, such as floods and wildfires, many state govern-

calamity. (so as to do) WRONG

这是manhattan中的原话，为什么这里so as to 不对呢？首先，它的确是作目的状语；其次，raise的主语是主句主语many state governments。为什么就不对呢？~~

“so as to” is an interesting construction. i don't think that gmac likes it very much -- i've never seen it in an officially correct answer -- but i think the main distinction is that it's used to describe indirect intentions.
for instance, the example above isn't great because you are calling this person directly to invite him, so you should use one of the earlier two versions.

on the other hand, consider the following: Joe bought a gym membership so as to become more attractive to women.
this is what i mean by indirect intention. obviously, the act of buying a gym membership itself is not going to make joe instantly more attractive to women (women do not swoon over a man's gym membership card). instead, there are plenty of implied intermediate steps between “by a gym membership” and “be more attractive”; the use of “so as to” implies that there are such intermediate steps in the process.

谢谢babybearmm~~Ron真是神级人物，我从来都不知道so as to是表示indirect intention的~

我原来还觉得A不大好，现在看，真是很好了~~~

不过Ron说这个不对”I study so hard that I can get a good grade. “——it probably doesn't make sense, unless getting a good grade is presented as some sort of extreme, unusual achievement.
这样说是不是太严格了？我觉得我们平时碰到的so...that没这么严格的区分，还是很make sense的。

我后来看到那道"so gradual as to be indistinguishable"时，才发现Ron的解释多么透彻，对那道题的解释基本不能再精妙了~

后面Ron的解释也是对的，这个真的是体现了the appreciation of the intricacies of the English language.
咱non-native speakers体会不到....Ron毕竟做过多年的professional journal editor
这么说吧，如果找个native speaker来读这句话，他/她会这么读：
I study soooooooo harrrd tha Ican getta gugrade.
希望我用以上文字表达清楚了哈，所以就是Ron说的extreme的意思

确实如你说的，很严格，Ron自己也说这个贴子的很多问题，他以前也没思考过，而且大概GMAT不会考，除非很高分段的题目，完全考对verbal的感悟。

第一个问题：

政府加税以筹集资金。这里加税的目的当然就是筹集资金啊！多直接啊！你为什么要理解成indirect intention呢？其实一般 so as to虽然也会出现在正确答案中，但着实是个不怎么讨人喜欢的结构，因为用so that无论是表目的还是结果都是最直接的。SC说白了就是用最少的话表达最清晰的意思。

So as to 一般只在这种情况下使用：

in general, you don't use so ADJ as to VERB unless the VERB describes some sort of state/condition. i.e., if the verb is an action verb, this construction generally isn't used.
for instance,
i am so ugly as to be viscerally repulsive to women. --> this works, because the verb “to be” describes a state/condition.
i am so ugly as to repel women on sight. --> you generally wouldn't see this in good writing, as “repel” is an action verb; the sentence would probably be written as i am so ugly that i repel women on sight.

第二个问题：
so as to 前面有两个人，会造成歧义：
1 King 取消了与C的婚姻,以便他能和...结婚
2 king取消了与C的婚姻,以便C可以和...结婚
所以A是不对的。

我觉得真的完全不用想这么多，因为关系近不近有时是很模糊的。
你记住这一条规则，基本上都适用的（在那个句子没其它绝对错误的情况下）：in general, you don't use so ADJ as to VERB unless the VERB describes some sort of state/condition. i.e., if the verb is an action verb, this construction generally isn't used.

而Joe bought a gym membership so as to become more attractive to women. 这里之所以用so as to ，是因为become它并不是一个action verb，而是 linking verb，就像 be、feel、get、turn。。。。更倾向于一种状态。。。。

so as to= in order to
so ... as to 如此... 以致

我以前还一直以为so as to 后面只有跟情态动词才表目的呢~~ （

）

但是so that 的确是只有在后面是情态动词时才表目的。

我总结来，总结去，觉得和 so as to比较， so that有两个好处：1.明确主语；2.配合情态动词能够更准确表达自己意思。
