标题: OG 186,以前也没有弄明白的

186. Judge Bonham denied a motion to allow members of the jury to go home at the end of each day instead of to confine them to a hotel.

(A) to allow members of the jury to go home at the end of each day instead of to confine them to

(B) that would have allowed members of the jury to go home at the end of each day instead of confined to

(C) under which members of the jury are allowed to go home at the end of each day instead of confining them in

(D) that would allow members of the jury to go home at the end of each day rather than confinement inE

(E) to allow members of the jury to go home at the end of each day rather than be confined to

我想问的是 将A改成to allow members of the jury to go home at the end of each day rather than( to ) confine them to

此时应该与E一样也是正确选项吧,且是to allow 和( to )confine them to平行,逻辑主语是motion!

请大家评判

rather than 后面如果接不定式,to一定要省。语法规则,no why。

LES MM感激,我遗漏了,已改了
我主要是想问三个不定式在一起时,它们到底是哪两个平行,共用一个修饰词,也就是逻辑主语
刚刚想到的上面的话,特精炼,颇得意,呵呵

(E) to allow members of the jury to go home at the end of each day rather than be confined to

A改成to allow members of the jury to go home at the end of each day rather than to confine them to

和E相比,改后的A有另一个问题,那就是allow members of the jury (to go home ...) rahter than (to confine them ...),第二个括号内的内容不合乎逻辑,我们可以说allow sb to go home,却不能说allow sb to confine them ...

motion 后接to 或that有区别么?

motion to 强调目的;motion that 强调motion的内容。

两者的区别在使用时,有时很难感觉出来,因为目的和内容似乎很难分清,所以to/that不是关键问题,平行是决定性因素

以上已收入本人菜鸟手册,作为经典注解

讨论:a motion是允许members回家的(a motion),而不是限制members 在一个旅馆的(a motion),

我改的相信大家也承认语法没问题,关键是逻辑,stoneren XD,我可不是顽固派

将A改成to allow members of the jury to go home at the end of each day rather than( to ) confine them to

我想是没有问题的,简化成a motion to allow---(to) confine them

而E正确选项简化是 members to go home---(to)be confined to,正如stoneren解说E为什么逻辑对

motion to do sth. 固定用法 做XXX的建议 不是表目的

作者: hpp920    时间: 2004-9-2 10:06

我在做这道题时有和楼主一样的问题, 我觉着改过的A, 对于我这个中国人来说逻辑非常清晰.没有任何歧义.但我觉着改过的A对英语为母语的人来说可能就不那么舒服.我觉着他们说英语有一定的习惯语势. 比如这种情况下, 他们很可能会自然而然的将后两个to并列起来, 而不是将一三并列. 我猜测, a motion to do...rather than do...可能并不是一种好的结构对他们来说.

不过这只是我的猜测, 没有根据.大家有好的见解, 欢迎指正.

马鱼MM太谦虚了!

Sentence correction questions test two broad aspects of language proficiency:
1. Correct expression. A correct sentence is grammatically and structurally sound. It conforms to all the rules of standard written English (for example: non-verb agreement, noun-pronoun agreement, pronoun consistency, pronoun case, and verb tense sequence). Further, a correct sentence will not have dangling, misplaced, or improperly formed modifiers, unidiomatic or inconsistent expressions, or faults in parallel construction.★★★★★
2. Effective expression. An effective sentence expresses an idea or relationship clearly and concisely as well as grammatically. This does not mean that the choice with the fewest and simplest words is necessarily the best answer. It means that there are no superfluous words or needlessly complicated expressions in the best choice.★★★★
In addition, an effective sentence uses proper diction (Diction refers to the standard dictionary meanings of words and the appropriateness of words in context.) In evaluating the diction of a sentence, you must be able to recognize whether the words are well chosen, accurate, and suitable for the context.★★★★

最后,再看一下题目的要求:
This question tests correctness and effectiveness of expression. In choosing your answer, follow the requirements of standard written English; that is, pay attention to grammar, choice of words, and sentence construction. Choose the answer that produces the most effective sentence; this answer should be clear and exact, without awkwardness, ambiguity, redundancy, or grammatical error.★★★

改过后既然大家都读出了ambiguity,我想ETS就不会选择将这样的表达作为答案的。

看了以上,我感觉:

改后的A其实逻辑意思变了,deny a motion to allow...... 而不是deny a motion to confine...

大家请体会,confine...并不是motion 的部分而是以前或者说现在jury 的一种现实情况。而e项就没有这个奇异了,go home 和be confined to hotel 比(motion 的动议和实际情况相比)。

而各位说的改后的a造成多个平行。我认为不会,从confine them就可以排除和go..平行了。

所以,我认为,该后的a不好是因为逻辑意思不服。

请批评指正
