标题: CXD page 53 question 39

39

Census data from Preland show that unmarried Prelandic men in their thirties outnumber unmarried Prelandic women in that age group by about ten to one. Most of these men do wish to marry. Clearly, however, unless many of them marry women who are not Prelandic, all but a minority will remain unmarried.

The argument makes which of the following assumptions?

(A)   Emigration from Preland is more common among women than among men.

(B)   A greater proportion of Prelandic women in their thirties than of Prelandic men of the same age would prefer to remain unmarried.

(C)   It is unlikely that many of these unmarried Prenlandic men will marry women more than a few years older than themselves.

(D)   Preland has a high rate of divorce.

(E)    Most of the unmarried Prelandic men are unwilling to marry women who are not prelandic.

The correct answer is C.

I do undertand C is the correct answer. But It seems to me that E is the correct answer too. Can anyone explain to me why choose C over E? Thanks.

Try deny test.  Deny E, we get "Many of the unmarried Prelandic men are willing to marry women who are not prelandic."  Does this cause the original argument to fall apart?  Not necessarily.  Because although these men may be willing to marry non-prelandic women, they may not actually be able to marry such women.  So, the original argument could still stand.  Therefore, E is not a necessary assumption of the argument.
