5.   Large national budget deficits do not cause large trade deficits. If they did, countries with the largest budget deficits would also have the largest trade deficits. In fact, when deficit figures are adjusted so that different countries are reliably comparable to each other, there is no such correlation.  If the statements above are all true, which of the following can properly be inferred on the basis of them?

(A) Countries with large national budget deficits tend to restrict foreign trade.

(B) Reliable comparisons of the deficit figures of one country with those of another are impossible.

(C) Reducing a country’s national budget deficit will not necessarily result in a lowering of any trade deficit that country may have.

(D) When countries are ordered from largest to smallest in terms of population, the smallest countries generally have the smallest budget and trade deficits.

(E) Countries with the largest trade deficits never have similarly large national budget deficits.

Large national budget deficits do not cause large trade deficits.看了大家以前的讨论,说是后面If they did,...

The passage asserts that large budgets deficits do not cause large trade deficits. If this is so, it is possible that a country with large budget and trade deficits could reduce its budget deficit and yet retain a large trade deficit.
可是从if this is so, 怎么就可以知道it is possible that a country with large....呢?

2.E选项为什么不对呢?OG的解释是it is consistent with the passage that countries with the largest trade deficits sometimes have similarly large budget deficits (choice E)。可题目明明是说“If they did, countries with the largest budget deficits would also have the largest trade deficits. In fact, when deficit figures are adjusted so that different countries are reliably comparable to each other, there is no such correlation.”,是no such correlation啊,也就是说largest trade deficits do not have the similarly large trade deficit,不是吗?

Large national budget deficits do not cause large trade deficits. Countries with the largest trade deficits have similarly large national budget deficits.出现

C好在will not necessarily 保留了很大空间

也就是说largest trade deficits do not have the similarly large trade deficit,不是吗?

没错,可是do not 不等于never阿 所以E因Never 可以删去

(C) Reducing a country’s national budget deficit will not necessarily result in a lowering of any trade deficit that country may have. 好像题目并没有提到a lowering of any trade deficit呀?

The passage asserts that large budgets deficits do not cause large trade deficits. If this is so,也就是如果the large budgets deficits do not cause large trade deficits, 怎么可以说: it is possible that a country with large budget and trade deficits could reduce its budget deficit and yet retain a large trade deficit.?

刚刚请教了NN,明白啦:)不敢独享,赶紧贴上:“C is basically talking about the same thing as "Large national budget deficits do not cause large trade deficits", just the opposite way.

XDJM, I found that in your analysis above, there is nothing concerning the last scentence---In fact, when deficit figures are adjusted so that different countries are reliably comparable to each other, there is no such correlation.

What's the function of the information provided by this scentence?

Thank you for your reply!

Just now, I asked a friend. He said that the third scentence is just to use more detailed info to strenthen what the first scentence means. The crux is the second scentence.

Not at all.

In inference questions, you should learn to avoid choices that use extreme language, and to be partial to choices that use more tentative language.
