I am a current student of Chicago GSB and now taking leave of absence at Shanghai. I'd be happy to answer your more specific questions.
Generally, Chicago/Wharton/MIT Sloan/Columbia/NYU/Rochester are believed to have strong finance concentration. Certainly there are slight difference among them, for instance, Chicago are strong in quantitative finance and financial theory, but Wharton seems stronger in placing their grads into the Wallstreet, probably because they are closer to NYC. Chicago has lots of big-name professors who go to the frontline of teaching, I bet you will love them.
In terms of finance, I feel it's still a too broad spectrum. Corporate finance, commercial banking, investment banking, private equity, venture capital, hedge funding, portofolio management are all areas of finance. I think it's to your advantage to be as specific as possible when defining your future career. Regarding your experience, I guess it's good for you to find a position in M&A or even PE or VC, coz' those areas are essentially where strategy and finance converge...
hope it helps.
chipmunk and siberiawolf, u gave me a good hint to select school!
Thank so much all of you!
And siberiawolf,
According to your understanding, if I wanna enter into industry instead of IB/MC post-MBA, which major should I focus?
BTW, I really like Chicago's acadamic style more, but is the strength helpful when I am looking for an internship or a job?
tks
Chicago's strength is very obvious. It prepares students with solid foundation in technical aspects. The technical is used here in comparison with soft skills, for which the HBS boasts themselves. Usually, the Chicago graduates are very strong in marketing, finance, accounting, or even international business. They have very good knowledge base and methodology sets, and these should be certainly favoriates if you want to find a position that's technical in nature in a coprorate.
Please keep in mind that most Chinese land job in IB/Corporate by their technical skills, not soft skills. You don't want to expect a Chinese talk around in a corporate america with his/her superior soft skills.
So the conclusion is, whatever post-MBA career you want, Chicago can prepares you well for it.
tell the truth, I refer corporate finance, since I was undergraduated from finance and accounting major, SJTU.
But, in terms of ROI, is the compensation of this kind of positions satisfactory?
