3.     The department defines a private passenger vehicle as one registered to an individual with a gross weight of less than 8,000 pounds.

(A) as one registered to an individual with a gross weight of less than 8,000 pounds

(B) to be one that is registered to an individual with a gross weight of less than 8,000 pounds

(C) as one that is registered to an individual and that has a gross weight of less than 8,000 pounds

(D) to have a gross weight less than 8,000 pounds and being registered to an individualC

(E) as having a gross weight of less than 8,000 pounds and registered to an individual

Choices A and B say that the individual, not the vehicle, has a gross weight of less than 8000 pounds, and defines…to be in B is incorrect. Choice C, the best answer, produces the correct phrase (defines…as) and clarifies the statement with a parallel construction(one that is … and that has…). In choice d, defines…to have is faulty, of is missing between weight and less, and being is not parallel with to have. In choice E, the verb forms having and registered are not parallel. The question is a little more difficult than the average.

不是说 "one" and "that" shouldn't be used together? See belwo

OG

9. Astronomers at the Palomar Observatory have discovered a distant supernova explosion, one that they believe is a type previously unknown to science.

(A)  that they believe is

(B)  that they believe it to be

(C)  they believe that it is of

(D)  they believe that is

(E)   they believe to be of

Choice E is best. The pronoun that in A and B should be deleted, since the pronoun one is sufficient to introduce the  modifier and the sentence is more fluid without that. In B and C, it and that it are intrusive and ungrammatical: the idiom is "believe x to be y." In the context of this sentence, the infinitive to be is more appropriate than the limited present-tense is in referring to an event that occurred long ago but has been discovered only recently. Finally, A, B, and D lack of and so illogically equate this particular explosion with the whole class of explosions to which it belongs: it is not a type but possibly one of a type.

Anyone can help?

Such GMAT.

a gross weight of less than 8,000 pounds
The department defines a private passenger vehicle  to have a gross weight less than 8,000 pounds and being registered to an individual

OG 9中one在定语从句中做宾语,believe one to be y,所以that省略了
