答案是A没有问题，问题是A中的many had feared 让lz很想不通，一般过去完成时的出现不是需要有过去式与之对应，以表示过去的过去么？

我觉得虽然sentence中没有明确说明过去式，但是可以从句意中理解：
gains in the stock market 发生在过去，不是当下~
economy will avoid the recession 是analyst的预期，based on gains~ so happens in the future
many had feared earlier in the year 发生在gains之前，所以就是“past of the past"... had feared..

我觉得虽然sentence中没有明确说明过去式，但是可以从句意中理解：
gains in the stock market 发生在过去，不是当下~
economy will avoid the recession 是analyst的预期，based on gains~ so happens in the future
many had feared earlier in the year 发生在gains之前，所以就是“past of the past"... had feared..

时态的问题让人头疼，这个我也一直搞不懂，它的时间状语是earlier in the year，难道选用过去完成时跟这个时间状语没关系？？

The key in this sentence is the modifier 'growing' because it suggests that the 'growing' has been continuing into the present (which means that it started in the past). The economists had feared the recession before this growing started but once the growing started (in the simple past) they stopped fearing the recession. So the fearing has to be in the past perfect tense.
This might not sound very clear but there is no better way of putting it. This is a tricky sentence because the simple past tense is not explicitly stated but implied.
