Question:

Most people would agree that buildings represent a valuable record of any society's past, but controversy arises when old buildings stand on ground that modern planners feel could be better used for modern purposes.

In your opinion, which is more important " preserving historic buildings or encouraging modern development? Explain your position, using reasons and examples based on your own experiences, observations, or reading.

Your Answer:

Nowadays there is a growing concern about which should take the priority-----old buildings or modern purposes when old buildings stand on ground that modern planners intend to utilize for modern purposes. In my view, these two interests at most time do not mutually inclusive and we should call for a balance in which historic and modern purposes are both fulfilled if we can make a good arrangement.

First of all, without doubt that some oil buildings represent a valuable record of any society's past. To some extent, they can be compared to the antique photos of a society at one point of history. A array of old buildings besides the HUANGPU River in Shanghai, which is established by the foreigners one hundreds years ago, for example, become a sign of Shanghai. They witness the development of this city in the last century and become the indispensable part of this city. It is obvious that such kind of valuable buildings must not be destroyed when meeting the conflicts between modern purposes because of their irreplaceable significance.

In addition, more often than not, old buildings and modern construction do not mutually exclusive. Moreover sometimes they can shine against each other. The old buildings along the HUANGPU River I described above can again serve as an apt example. In 1997, the Oriental Pearl Tower is finished just in front of these buildings. The new and old together add beauty to the city, correspondingly represent the city in different times. Now they are scenes where every tourist must visit when they come to Shanghai.

Admittedly, when some old and obsolete buildings hinder the modern development, they should give up way to the new constructions, because they are of less historic value. The city should ceaselessly step forward when it is inevitable to replace the old with the new. This also conform to the rule of times.

In sum, the modern purposes and historic buildings at most time can survive together and bring about the desirable effects only is the arrangement is properly made. Nevertheless, some old buildings without significant historic values should give way to the brand-new constructions as the trend of the world is to develop.

作文一直最头痛了,中文的也写不太好,所以一直是块心病。限时写的,大家提些意见,谢谢。
