Q20:

Rivaling the pyramids of Egypt or even the ancient cities of the Maya as an achievement, the army of terra-cotta warriors created to protect Qin Shi Huang, China’s first emperor, in his afterlife is more than 2,000 years old and took 700,000 artisans more than 36 years to complete them.

  • took 700,000 artisans more than 36 years to complete them

  • took 700,000 artisans more than 36 years to complete it

  • took 700,000 artisans more than 36 years to complete

  • 700,000 artisans took more than 36 years to complete

  • to complete them too 700,000 artisans more than 36 years

  • 答案是B,我觉得C对,B岂不变成了"the army of terra-cotta warriors took 700,000 artisans more than 36 years to complete it". it 多余啊。

    The answer should be C!

Please refer to the sample sentence cited from Longman.

    complete [transitive]
    1. to finish doing or making something, especially when it has taken a long time

The students have just completed their course.

The building took two years to complete.

This book took years to complete.

    support C

习惯表达方式: take sb. some time to do sth

通常会用it 来指代 to do sth, 所以我们经常看到的形式是: It takes sb. some time to do sth.

还有一种变化是, 将sth提作主语:sth takes sb. some time to do.

The building took two years to complete.

the building took two years to complete 和

the building took workers two years to complete (it)

你说过it 指代to to sth,如果这句是(to complete the building) took workers two years我就觉得好。

the building took workers two years to complete。

it 指代 to do sth.

    真正的主语或宾语的形式有两种:

    1. to do sth. 即:不定式;

    2. that从句

    仔细研究一下下面这两个例句,这个问题就会迎刃而解了。(临考前一天悟出此道理

Mr. Zhang said his father, taking one-half year to complete, created the museum boat.

Another piece that his father created of cranes took two years to complete.

这里的it怎么也不可能指代to do sth.

    183. Archaeologists in Ireland believe that a recently discovered chalice, which dates from the eighth century, was probably buried to keep from being stolen by invaders.

    (A)            to keep from

    (B)             to keep it from

    (C)            to avoid

    (D)            in order that it would avoid

    (E)             in order to keep from

In choice A, the phrase/frow being stolen lacks the necessary noun or pronoun that specifies what it is that might be stolen. Choice B is best because it provides the pronoun it, which refers to chalice.

Like choice A, choices C and E lack the pronoun. D is wordy and awkward in its use of the passive voice. Moreover,
avoid is used imprecisely in C and D because it illogically suggests that the chalice is acting to prevent its own theft.

    1)complete, keep为vt.

(Effectiveness)

Sth. takes sb. sometime to complete.

OG183: Chalice is buried to keep it from being stolen by invaders.(correct)

OG234: Wavelength is too long for the eys to register it. (wrong)

基本可以分为the army of terra-cotta warriors...【 is more than 2,000 years old】 and 【took 700,000 artisans more than 36 years to complete

也就是再简化一下the army of terra-cotta warriors took 700,000 artisans more than 36 years to complete

    如果后面没有“being stolen by invaders”的话,这里的it应该要省略(和本题一样)。

    keep..from有意義,但是把being stolen by invaders省掉不是句意很奇怪
