This is mostly a reading comprehension plus necessary assumption.
The key point in the passage you need to pay attention is the first sentence: The sense of delayed gratification, by definition, is working now for later pleasure. If you think over this sentence, its assumption is that the SAME person has to conduct both the working part and the pleasure part.
The same assumption goes with the children and toys. A child would assembly the toys him/herself, then enjoy the later pleasure.
