46. A study commissioned by the Department of Agriculture showed that if calves exercise and associated with other calves, they will require less medication and gain weight quicker than do those raised in confinement.
(A) associated with other calves, they will require less medication and gain weight quicker than do
(B) associated with other calves, they require less medication and gain weight quicker than
(C) associate with other calves, they required less medication and will gain weight quicker than do
(D) associate with other calves, they have required less medication and will gain weight more quickly than do
(E) associate with other calves, they require less medication and gain weight more quickly than
Choice E, the best answer, uses the adverbial phrase more quickly than to modify the verb phrase gain weight. In A, B, and C, quicker than is incorrect because an adjective should not be used to modify a verb phrase. E is also the only choice with consistent verb tenses. The first verb in the clauses introduced by showed that is exercise. A and B incorrectly compound that present tense verb with a past tense verb, associated. C and D correctly use associate, but C follows with the past tense required and D with the present perfect have required. Both C and D incorrectly conclude with the future tense will gain.(if 引导的条件句,从句用一般现在时,主句用一般将来时为什么不对?倒是觉得E的主句用的一般现在时有问题。)
E是不是省略了do?即if calves exercise and associate with other calves, they require less medication and gain weight more quickly than do those raised in confinement.(倒装?)
谢谢NN解答

“其实OG也特恶心,好几题反复强调if do, will的时态,但是又有两题主句用这种一般现在时,却又不好好说清楚。”
有同感!这里就只能拿常理做解了?
那么E是不是省略了do?即if calves exercise and associate with other calves, they require less medication and gain weight more quickly than do those raised in confinement.(倒装?)
偶昨天看OG时看到这题还是吃了一惊,感觉SC真是变化没测。用一句时髦的话说就是唯一没有变化的就是变化。
还是应了那句话,答案是比较出来的,所谓的对错也只存在相对正确和相对错误之分吧!
我想可能是因为C、D中与will gain 并列的前半部分用的时态不是将来时,造成不一致所以错吧。if 后接将来时本身应该是对的。
那么E是不是省略了do?即if calves exercise and associate with other calves, they require less medication and gain weight more quickly than do those raised in confinement.(倒装?)
比较句式,后面一个比较对象的动词如果同前,一般都可省啊
比如:Mary has more books than Jimmy(has). 省略了动词has.
从句用一般现在时 主句用将来时或一般现在时都可以的 这在OG中都有例子也都说明的 没有错的
主要C和D中不平行 主句的两个动作时态不对应所以错
当比较时 两个不同的主语 第二个比较对象可以用those明确指代 而且谓语动作相同时 通常do 省略的
if条件从句两种用法:1 if x happens ,y will happen; 2 if x heppens, y should happen.should必须省略。
我自己的理解是这样的:
当表达的是事实时,用第1种:假如天下雨,他就不会来了。If it rains, he will not come。这句话的说话者知道这个结果是一定会发生的,下雨他一定不会来。
当表达的是推测、假设或推理,用第2种:假如天下雨,他应该就不会来了吧。If it rains, he (should) not come.这句话的说话者不知道他会不会来,只是作了一个推测。在GMAT中这个should必须省略。
这个题目说的不是确定的事实,不是只要联系就一定会如何如何。这是作者的推理,“应该就会如何如何了吧”的意思,所以用第2种。
这是我自己的结论。NN们指正啊。
是你自己理解的还是有语法书做参考?
我看到的虚拟语气中if从句谓语动词一般都用过去时,表示与现在事实相反的假设。
for example:if it were ture, Y (should/would)be ...。
if 条件句出现在此题中的用法个人觉得是很少见的,没办法,ETS就是让我们比较答案。这种用法只能记下做一下参考!
do 的省略是很头疼的.
i run faster than you do 好象是GMAT家规之类的原则,怎么就给推翻了?
我的做法:associated, 去AB,看句尾,E没有do, 去E,比较CD, C quicker 错, 选D, 还人为肯定对.
人家在than前面有两个动词,require和gain。你用一个do,准备对应哪一个呢?

不太同意携隐的这种说法。根据薄冰高级英语语法:
“条件句分真实条件句与非真实条件句。真实条件句所表的假设是可能发生或实现的,如:
1)Oil floats if you pour it on water.
2) If I hav enough money next year, I will go to Japan.
3)If you have finished with that book, take it back to the library.

是省略了do;if calves exercise and associate with other calves, they require less medication and gain weight more quickly than do those raised in confinement. 是倒装,因为those raised in confinement 这个词组比较长,可以把do提前。
这两天又一遍的翻到了这个题。这一次看og解释又有些新的体会
大家所讨论的“will”问题,og只是说C/D中的“will”使用不当,但并没有提及A中的will使用有什么错误。
可见,其实ETS也并没有明确表示出在本句中两种“if”用法的倾向。
因为,仅凭这句话来断定说话者的语气有些牵强
个人意见,如有雷同,纯属巧合
偶认为IF还是比较简单的,(1)只要知道这个是有效性错误就行。
(2)IF后的从句可以表将来,也可以表现实。按照这个句子,将来(这个事情将会发生)或者现实(这个事情本来就是定理,是一定会发生的)都可以,所以,does not matter罗。
A study => 暗示此為事實,以直述方式說明即可。
我覺得我們看og解釋應該是前後文一起看吧!
Both C and D incorrectly conclude with the future tense will gain.這一句的前一句是 C and D correctly use associate, but C follows with the past tense required and D with the present perfect have required.所以這裡不是說 if X happens, Y will happen.
The comparison is between calves and those(referring to another set of calves); the verb do ungrammatically interrupts the comparison and should be eliminated
这里应该是为了避免do的指代问题,才把do给省了的吧~~~
同意
此题的DO 省略确实有问题,容易产生误解,容易让人将require less medician and gain weight 与those raised in confinement 比较.产生逻辑上不对等
如下面例题
19.In addition to having more protein -than wheat does, the protein in rice is higher quality than that in wheat, with more of the amino acids essential to the human diet.
(b)rice has protein of higher quality than that in
(e)rice has a protein higher in quality than
Choice E needs either that in or does after wheat to make a complete and logical comparison.还是不懂啊,请nn指点~!
到底do 的省略是为了避免指待不清 ,还是说谓语一样的话本来就可以省阿?
or logically, it is the comparation between two sets of calves??
顺面解释上面的,因为逻辑上讲的是有蛋白质这件事得比较,所以必须补出has
所以,逻辑是王道~
偶认为IF还是比较简单的,(1)只要知道这个是有效性错误就行。
(2)IF后的从句可以表将来,也可以表现实。按照这个句子,将来(这个事情将会发生)或者现实(这个事情本来就是定理,是一定会发生的)都可以,所以,does not matter罗。

同意YSC的解释
呵呵,from 《longman english grammar》,这里IF是when的意思(当...时),当IF意谓when时常指永久性真理。句中的动词可以是WILL或一般现在时。如:If it rains heavily,our river floods.
不太同意携隐的这种说法。根据薄冰高级英语语法:
“条件句分真实条件句与非真实条件句。真实条件句所表的假设是可能发生或实现的,如:

if 从句不是用现在时吗?也可以用现在完成时?
這裡的 If A do..., B do...
是直說句, 表達一般事實的, 不是假設語氣.
另外, do 的錯誤跟省略無關, 而是如果此題的do 出現的位置和比較的前半部不平行,所以ets說interrupts the comparison.
將原句恢復就會看得很清楚:
They(S1) require (V1-1)
less medication and gain(V1-2) weight more quickly than
{those raised in confinement}(S2) do (V2).
do代替 require和gain等相同的動作。
題目的錯誤是錯在將do的位置移到those前面。變成...than do those...
同意33楼意见。
if不能表虚拟。“if”本身就是真实条件句的重要标志。
