419.        In the traditional Japanese household, most clothing could be packed flatly, and so it was not necessary to have elaborate closet facilities.

(A) flatly, and so it was not necessary to have elaborate closet facilities

(B) flat, and so elaborate closet facilities were unnecessary

(C) flatly, and so there was no necessity for elaborate closet facilities

(D) flat, there being no necessity for elaborate closet facilities

(E) flatly, as no elaborate closet facilities were necessary

419, sec03-16

D, there being no necessity错。B is best

**********************************************

longman: flatly

1flatly refuse/deny/oppose etc something
to say something in a direct and definite way that is not likely to change
He flatly denied ever having met the woman.
2without showing any emotion
'Aunt Alicia has changed her will,' she said flatly.

flat adv.

in a position in which the surface of something is against another surface without curving or sloping
The bed can be folded flat for storage.

and so there was no necessity for elaborate closet facilities

应该还是flat正确,most clothing could be packed flat, flat这里用作补语,相当于most clothing could be packed to be flatly.
