246. Joachim Raff and Giacomo Meyerbeer are examples of the kind of composer who receives popular acclaim while living, often goes into decline after death, and never regains popularity again.
(A) often goes into decline after death, and never regains popularity again
(B) whose reputation declines after death and never regains its status again
(C) but whose reputation declines after death and never regains its former status
(D) who declines in reputation after death and who never regained popularity again
(E) then has declined in reputation after death and never regained popularity
Key: C, agree. The question here is the highlighted after death, gramatically it should refer to reputation in first priority, rather than to composer, therefore causing confusing, am I right?
its修饰composer,在可男可女的情况下,用its吧!
个人浅见,NN们看看!!
是這樣媽? 我記得its可以代人(當主詞無分男女時)
是因為這裡whose reputation 的關係
重心變成以reputation為主吧
請告訴我哪一個才對
I still have a question:
If "its" refers to "reputation",then the sentence can be rewritten like this: Joachim Raff and Giacomo Meyerbeer are examples of the kind of composer who receives popular acclaim while living, but whose reputation declines after death and the reputation never regains its former status
这样就成了reputation regains status,个人认为应该是composer regains status ,另外,想问
c为什么不是: but whose reputation declines after death and who never regains its former status . who为什么可以省略呢?
up
那紫草MM的意思就是说 its指代的是 reputation ?
如果这样的话:

選項(c) 沒有 again。
(c) but whose reputation declines after death and never regains its former status

我覺得after death是指composer的death~沒有不嚴謹! 因為reputation的前面接的是whose呀! 表示是composer's reputation! 所以用death也該是composer's death~~ 這樣也很平行! 根據句意death怎麼可能是reputation的~ reputation只能上勝或下降! 怎麼能死?! 所以沒有confusing! (個人覺得sc還是以句意優先)
its指代的是 reputation .
(How can the composer regain his status after his death? Dead person can no longer do anything, neither decline nor regain.)
我认为从逻辑上来考虑这个after death没有问题啊??!!!
前面他说了living ,那不就是before death 吗?!!!
Joachim Raff and Giacomo Meyerbeer are examples of the kind of composer who receives popular acclaim while living, but whose reputation declines after death and never regains its former status .
我认为its 不是指代的composer,你们看,那些在生前很受欢迎的作家死后名声就下降拉,而且这个名声也没有回到他以前那种形式的地位.
所以我觉得应该是指代的reputation.

答案C没有问题,但是OG11对d的解释是:The verb tenses are inconsistent with present tense used in the first phrase; redundant again. ,问题是如果将d该为:who declines in reputation after death and who never regains popularity. 是不是就行了呢?三个who非常罗嗦,而且前两个who之间有逗号,但第二格和第三个之间却用and连接,非常怪异啊。
个人觉得D去掉again改动后,最好前面还是有一个but,因为意思转折了:but (who) declines in reputation after death and (who) never regains popularity.
同时who因为重复也去掉:也就是but declines in repuration after death and never regains popularity. 这样就正确了。
请问,两个连续的定语从句,其先行词就一定一样么?(个人觉得答案为no)
即,用了who再用whose,不用担心两者指代不一样么?
或者要根据语义来判断的?
多谢!
its当然指代reputation
我想问:regains its former status 不redundant么?
regain 还要former干什么?

regain 和former起的作用是不一样的。如果用regain---again,这里的again是修饰regain,造成了意思重复,但是former是修饰status的,两个有不同的作用,之前也有过类似的情况,好像在大全上,等找到了把例子再贴上来

The tenses of choice "D" are the same as the correct choice"C".
Why the verb tenses are wrong in choice D??
我对E.选项的错误原因还是感到十分困惑:
(E) then has declined in reputation after death and never regained popularity
OG说时态不符,但好象同一句话中是允许一般现在时和现在进行时共存的呀! never regained之前应该是省略掉了一个has,和前面的has保持一致.
到是OG没提及的一点我觉得值得考虑,composer has declined 这种主谓搭配正确么? 我是靠着这一点才排除E.的,但看过解释以后整个感觉就是歪打正着.
og11里对于B的解释是:
The two clause are not parallel, lack a coordinating conjunction, and do not describe the same thing
不是特别理解,为什么whose reputation前一定要加一个连词呢?不可以看作who receives popular accalim while living, whose reputation declines after death 和never regains its status三者并列么?
应属于a, but b句型
a(who receives popular acclaim while living),but b(but whose reputation declines after death and never regains its former status)
its 修饰 reputation
36楼的vivian提出的
应属于a, but b句型
a(who receives popular acclaim while living),but b(but whose reputation declines after death and never regains its former status)
its 修饰 reputation
如果是这种句型,那么OG在DE中的解释为
Choices D and E suffer from inconsistency in verb tense. To maintain parallelism the verbs must be receives... declines... regains.
又怎么说呢?
再问NN, who, whose, who怎么平行?

再问NN, who, whose, who怎么平行?--不是NN,意见如下。这个很正常吧。这里who从句和whose从句都是修饰composer,而从句意可以看出,the kind of composer是一种常理即某一种人,所以用一般时态啊。不对之处请指正:)
Joachim Raff and Giacomo Meyerbeer are examples of the kind of composer who receives popular acclaim while living, but
whose reputation declines after death and never regains its former status
对于这里的平行问题很不理解,知道的朋友请帮帮忙:
1.是who和but...构成大转折,but中whose和and... 构成小并列吗
2. and之后是省略了who吗,为什么可以这样省略,og其他地方好像没见到呀

我理解
who...... but whoes... 并列
declines ..... and ...regains...并列
所以是一个两个元素的大并列, 一个两个元素的小并列

agree.
I have a question.
Why a comma is used befor but?
Is it suitable to delect it here?
强烈不理解为什么 reputation 可以regains its status????
regain的动作发出者应该是人吧
google了一圈,都是regain reputaion的句子,根本没有像这道题的用法
我理解全句还原应该是:
Joachim Raff and Giacomo Meyerbeer are examples of the kind of composer who receive popular acclaim while living ,but (the kind of composer) whose reputation delines after death and (whose reputation) never regains its former status.
大家觉得呢?
