My version: The assertion that the best teachers are those who encourage the students to challenge popular ideas rather than accept them is too simple to define the best teachers based on only one criteria. Admittedly, while teachers who encourage students to challenge existing ideas have gone to a higher level of teaching, best teachers still need to possess other characteristics to develop a dynamic teaching-learning relationship. Here are some reasons.
The purpose of education is not all about scoring high in tests but about being useful to society. A good teacher who encourages students to challenge popular ideas rather than accept them, can help students to develop the ability to think independently and creatively. This ability can benefit students not only in academic performance but also in future careers. In fact, critical thinking is one of the key elements to success in today’s dynamic working environment, especially those in high-tech industry. Developing the ability to challenge popular ideas can enable students to have original and creative perspectives, which are the main drivers to the research and technology innovations nowadays.
However, to say that the best teachers are those who encourage the students ignores other necessary characteristics of best teachers who are supposed to bring out the best of their students. The best teachers should be able to teach a student according to his aptitude. Naturally, every student is different and might require different approaches by teachers according to each student’s talents and drawbacks. For example, Michael Jackson couldn’t paint as good as Picasso but he is a genius of music. Therefore, the best teachers need to discover students’ real interests and talents and inspire them to develop and strengthen those areas.
Last but not the least, what makes teachers to be the best should also include their pursuits to teach not only the skills but also the values such as moral and ethical. Yet, many may think those values, as important as they are, are not comparable with the skills in practice. That’s not true. The success of a man not only requires a great skill but also a great mind. While emphasizing educations on moral values, teachers are able to make sense to students to respect other people and respect themselves. Students with a high integrity will accomplish much further and better in their life than those who are morally corrupted and disrespected by people.
In conclusion, the best teachers are those who establish an interacted teaching-learning relationship with students. They guide students to explore knowledge, encourage them to challenge popular ideas, push them to achieve their dream and supervise them to avoid mistakes.
