E从句这里要么就是was, 要么就是is. 不可能是had been, 因为没有"过去的过去"的含义。如果是is的话，逻辑上好像不同，马达加斯加不可能现在是仅存的几个人类定居地，所以只能是was. 主句的一般现在时没有问题，表示一个现在的事实。

it指代应该是指Madagascar, 主从句的主语一致。
