标题: OG 06 "-ing" verb use as object

6.     In virtually all types of tissue in every animal species, dioxin induces the production of enzymes that are the organism’s trying to metabolize, or render harmless, the chemical that is irritating it.

(A) trying to metabolize, or render harmless, the chemical that is irritating it

(B) trying that it metabolize, or render harmless, the. chemical irritant

(C) attempt to try to metabolize, or render harmless, such a chemical irritant

(D) attempt to try and metabolize, or render harmless, the chemical irritating itE

(E) attempt to metabolize, or render harmless, the chemical irritant

Although an “-ing” verb such as trying can sometimes be used as a noun, the phrase the organism’s trying to metabolize in A is unidiomatic because trying is used as the object of organism’s.

I am just very curious about the use of "-ing" verb as object. And why is it wrong to use "trying" as object of "organism's"???

Thanks.

动名词一般表达动作的持续性(名词化), 但接在所有格后面并不是那么恰当....

Thanks for your reply.

Any more details about this issue?

偶个人的感觉是如果动词有名词形式就应该避免动名词充当名词的情况

比如decide 应该用decision而不是deciding

try应该用attempt而不是trying或attempting

further clarifications are welcome

优于定律还是很准滴!动词优于抽象名词优于动名词
