In other words, the best answer must logically and grammatically attach to the main clause when the list is omitted. Choice A fails this test:The diet. . . was largely vegetarian, and meat rarely. D fails also, because it lacks a function word such as with to link it to the main clause. The wording of choice B is imprecise and ambiguous--for example, it could mean that meat was scarce, or that it was not well done or medium. Choice C is unidiomatic. Clearly phrased, grammatically linked, and idiomatically sound, choice E is best.
我的问题是，其实D选项也是独立主格，例子如下： The dog came in, its head drooping/Its leg broken//its nose a strowberry 这里分词和名词都可以用作独立主格, 同时还有介词短语也可以做独立主格表示伴随： The soldier came in, gun in hand. 这句话也可以写成：The soldier came in , with gun in hand.
在原题中，我认为D也是独立主格表示伴随，meat表示的是meal cakes的伴随状态。 我想错误原因是否在于，这样表达意思不够清晰，如果是meat of which a rarity会更好，但是还是不如E好，是么？

所谓run on sentenc跟动词没有关系，而是跟连接词有关系。虽说dash后面是一种解释，不一定是要符合句子的原则，可是明眼看的出来这个是个List。即便是list，末尾的词也应该是and为最后一个词来结尾。所以D是绝对不对的。所以我说这个D像是run on sentence一样的，单独的列着
