New genetic evidence--together with recent studies of elephants' skeletons, tusks, and other anatomical features----provide compelling support for classifying Africa's forest elephants and its savanna elephants as separate species.

B. provide compelling support for the classification of

C. provides compelling support for the classification of

D. provides compelling support for classifying

the given answer is D. but I prefer E. confusing....open to discussion.

虽然我仅仅在OG的一个解释里查到provide sth to do这种用法，而没有在其他任何词典中查到类似用法，但我还是相信provide sth to do这种用法是可行的，to do用来表示目的，但是，这道题只能用provide sth for sth的结构，因为provide的主语是genetic evidence，但是to do sth的主语从逻辑上讲，应该是人而不是evidence，所以主谓之间存在不匹配，而for就避免了这个问题，另：provide sth for 是一个标准结构。
