1.我想问的是A 能不能看成是句末同位语，指代前面一整个句子？
2.如果它是修饰词的话为什么一定是修饰items 而不是就近equipment?

不能指代前面的整个句子，因为a method to protect warriors against enemy arrows是一个不定式修饰的名词短语。

为什么不能啊？还是不明白，句末同位语不是既可以修饰前面的名词，又可以修饰前面一整句话的么？

Q1：同位语是【a method...】，那么重点就在于这个a method上面。那什么是a method?你可以说【Using the shields is a method】，但是单纯的说【The shield is a method】就不对了。
也就是说，【a method的同位语应该是“用这个盾”】；而【“盾”的同位语，应该是a equipment这样的词】

Q2：要关注句意，在这个同位语出现前的那个句子是一个主系表结构。主干是【The shields were items of military equipments】，那句子的重点就是【主语】和【宾语】，而且不论是修饰主语还是修饰宾语都是一样的（因为主系表结构表达的就是A is B，所以修饰AB一样）

那宾语，是items of military equipments。of后面的结构是表达items的属性，相当于是形容词，【与军事装备相关的items】，那重点就仍然是items了。
